    MBaggese:

The key to that putt if you are long...is find your line and speed and hit late...this will keep the ball very near the hole, and not have a long putt to save par.

The approach should be tried up high and well left of the hole..result will be trickling down past below the hole with 7-15 feet for an uphill bird putt...note:/...the dots lie to you, it's near a straight in putt...just whack the heck out of it:)

Thanks for the (bolded)tip. I actually tried this a couple of times tonight on a different course and it seemed to work great. I'm pretty sure I have done this accidentally a few times, but never took notice to what actually happened. I'm a ding putter, but I'll surely employ this tactic on my sidehill putts in the future.

Well on 4th Sept 2013 I earned another minor victory at Merion.  Entered the Week 36 9 hole unlimited, and carded a Bird at 10, and back to back Birds at 12 and 13 for a bogey free -3 31.  I had to get extremely lucky to get it though, because on 17 I missed right and landed in the weeds on the edge of the bunker.  I chunked my Pitch shot natch and was still off the green and shooting for Par.  But I pulled the pin and played a chip shot, and miraculously she drained right in the middle of the cup.

The Merion New Pins Challenge is a whole different story however, and it continues to beat me like I stole something.  A starter putter on Tournament greens is a recipe for disaster, and when you throw in the fact that my average distance to the hole on the tougher holes is a good 30 feet or more, it turns in to outright epic failure.  Even the holes that shouldn't be that difficult - like the short uphill par 4, I think its 7 or 8 -- are giving me so much trouble because of the slope of the greens.  My experience with this game thus far is that on certain holes any putt outside of 2 feet is literally unmakable because there is so much break, but hopefully with better equipment and more more practice this will finally start to change.  There have been multiple rounds where I have rage quit because I was so sick and tired of carding a 4 putt (or worse) on 5 or 8.  Only good thing about this challenge is I can earn the tournament XP boost (if I actually finish the round that is) without having to worry about shooting a good round and lowering my average.

I think most of the new pins are Merion are easier.  I don't believe that I have played the new pin on #5 but I'm sure that one has to be easier than the front middle pin that is one of the most difficult approach shots on WGT (esp from the back tees).

You are correct on this course, esp on high green speeds, there are just a few putts that are almost impossible in stroke play.  In alt shot or match play you can bang them in knowing if you miss it doesn't matter but when you are playing stroke and can't afford a 15 foot come back putt you just can't make them.

That being said I do enjoy playing Merion, the up and downs are fun to calculate and the course itself with the short holes and very long hole make for interesting shots.

    BigInigoMontoya:
And even after just one day earlier I carded a 10 on 15 and a 7 on 16, you failed to keep me from coming back for more.  I was determined to not let you keep me down, and I did it.

Thank you for placing your accomplishment in context. I've been playing for a month and was feeling pretty cheeky -- attacking pins, 2 putts from <25' -- until I ran into the Merion tournament speed greens and diabolical pin placements. Bogeys felt like birdies, and I had to re-calibrate my entire putting game midway through my shell-shockingly bad front nine.

Glad I found this thread - I hope to learn from your example and the advice from those cited in your excellent post.
