One under par 69 at Merion!!!!!!  I was competing in the Michelin Challenge, so I was hitting from the Master tees, but putting on Tour Pro greens.  LoL.

    My card

Now I know that for most people here posting a one under par score is a WHAT IN THE NAME OF @#$% $%^ *&#@ **** off day, but for me this is a very good score, particularly on this course.  Ever since I joined the Tour ~2 months ago, Merion has consistently been one of my most difficult courses.  But today, I finally exorcised my demons, and I got the best of this course.

On the infamous 5th hole, after I found the bunker off the tee, you failed to give me anything higher than bogey - my only bogey of the round, as a matter of fact.  On the dog leg 12th hole, after shanking my drive in the rough and missing the green, you failed to take back a stroke when I got up and down for par.  And on the notorious 15th - one of the most difficult holes in the game, IMHO - after my 7 iron couldn't hold the front left corner of the green, you still failed to give me a bogey.  I missed long at the par 3 17th, but your green with more undulations than a Mama June double chin still couldn't give me a bogey when I got up and down for par.  And you had one last chance at 18 when my approach 3 wood came up short, but you still couldn't beat me as I drained the 4 footer for par.  You tried your best to break me on your difficult back 9, but I failed to drop a stroke, even after hitting only 4 of 9 GIR.  15 through 18 is one of the most difficult closing stretches in the game in my opinion, but I played it at even par.  And for 18 straight holes, your notoriously unforgiving greens -- widely regarded to be some of the most difficult in the game, IMHO -- failed to give me a single 3 putt.  And even after just one day earlier I carded a 10 on 15 and a 7 on 16, you failed to keep me from coming back for more.  I was determined to not let you keep me down, and I did it. Even if I never make better than triple on 5 or 15 for the rest of my life, or never shoot under par, or even break 80, I can finally say that on this day, and in this round, for the first time ever, I beat you, Merion.  I finally beat you.

And now, I'd like to take a moment to personally acknowledge those of you who helped me with this accomplishment..........

nivlac, who's tips for controlling putting distance have enormously helped me on the greens.

alosso, for posting the putting distance formula, without which I would just basically be guessing on nearly every putt.

mrcaddie, xtabent, and the entire Lobsters Lair™ for the gift of a Cleveland 64° wedge during Christmas in July.  Still one of my favorite clubs in my bag.

Sorry for rambling on like this, but I consider this to be one of my greatest accomplishments since earning my Tour card, and I just wanted to share it with everyone.  Have a good weekend.

    -Inigo

Here's a tip to beat Merion from one who just shot 62 from the Legend tee on champ greens in the Michelin Challenge

Keep the ball below the hole. You can be very aggressive on putts from below the hole at Merion, allowing you to take much of the break out of the putts. My only true downhill birdie putt I made was on 3, and that from 13 feet. Also, NEVER try and drive any of the par 4s or try and reach one of the par 5s in 2. Just lay up. The wedges on those holes are some of the easiest in the entire game (except for 4 as one can overspin the ball easily)

Now... that advice did get me at 15 as I doubled from the front fringe (missing a 3 footer didnt exactly help the situation, however)

    Inigo!!

Great work man - the way you wrote this was cool  - the spirit you approach this game with is how it should be !

    Very refreshing point of view!

more undulations than a mama June double chin lolol

Thanks for the flowers - much of my knowledge comes from others :)

Congratulations - we share this best score!

May I inform you that Tour Pros and Masters both play from "very fast" greens?

Good stuff Inigo. The trick to that course is knowing when to step on the gas and when to ease off. There are a number of birdie holes and a bunch of them come right in a row. As you said though, the key to posting a good score isn't about how many birdies you make on the easy holes, it's about managing to get through the tough holes unscathed.

I had a rather unusual round there recently. Right out of the gate, I went eagle-eagle on 1 and 2 and had visions of my first sub-60 round there and my name atop the leaderboard at the Michelin Challenge. Those visions were short lived. By the time I putted out on #7, I had fallen all the way back to even par. Merion giveth, Merion taketh away. I stormed off the golf course in disgust.

Keep chipping away at Merion. It can be had with patience and lots of practice. Great nickname BTW.

No kidding???  I thought I had read somewhere here on the forum that there are 2 versions of the "Tournament" green, and I was under the impression that Masters play on the 'slower' version of the 2, with Tour Masters playing on the 'faster' version, leaving Championship for both Legends and Tour Legends.  Apparently I was wrong.

As far as I know, the 10th is the only  legitimately driveable par 4, but I never attempt it. In fact, I normally hit a 3wood on that hole because I think it gives me a greater chance of holding the fairway.  And I don't think any of the par 5s are reachable in two, unless you have an extreme tail wind helping you out -- at least with my current clubs anyways. In fact, it takes a perfect drive for me just to carry the rough on #4 to find the fairway, especially if I have a head wind blowing down on me.

Tour masters and Legends play off Tournament speed, which some believe to have two speeds. Only Tour Legends play on Championship greens.

Nice job Inigo, I also posted a 69 on the Michelin Challenge on the Pro leaderboards. Cheers!

Yes, this is correct. I can't say I noticed much difference between TM and Legend greens, but then again I was only a TM for a couple of weeks. In some competitions as Legend the green speed has been Championship.

Merion is a difficult course and an extremely difficult course to avoid bogies on from Legend tee. I have only twice made the front 9 in about a dozen games with no bogies - although I usually finish under par.

Hole 3, 5 and 6 are very difficult. Hole 5 is a lot harder from the Legend tee it's 80 yards behind the master tee. Chances are you will have to use a wood or at least a long iron to the green. However, it's 6 that usually catches me out which is 60 yards behind the Master Tee.
