I hate you! For the third time in my short and embarrassing wgt.com lifetime, I ended up getting a GIR on every hole of St. Andrews except for #17. I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!

(Of course, I blame the hole and not my lack of talent.)

It get's worst. believe me.  I think that I have had about 8-10 GIR at St. Andrews until I got to the 17th.  That hole is my nemesis.  I think my percentage of hitting the fairway must be < 25%, and despite however I shape my shots I always invariably seem to run the ball off the back of the green on my approach shot.

#17 is a http://www.wgt.com/replay.aspx?ID=ee5ad52e-1c47-4b84-9894-a22e007d2f59 hard hole with pin in back but this time I own it, I got the get the Pig. I've found that a punched 3W or 3I (depending on distance obviously) can get surprisingly close to the pin and almost always on the green on that hole.

For me the big question is how the hell did it take me this long to discover that.

You know why this hole is so hard? It's a Par 5 in disguise, I was told.

Furtheron, me thinks that your equipment might be standing in your way. There will be better choices available to you, and with some luck you'll get them before stepping up on the tips, as a Legend.

Some guys can throw darts at the back pin from 200+ out (an A/S opponent unfortunately), but us humans must be content with the front part of the green!

I agree, I checked just before seeing this post and figured the K15 irons weren't helping.  Something with higher ball flight is what you need at The Road Hole.  If the ball comes in pretty flat it's got a good chance of running right through, a high flying ball that drops down hard will have a better chance of staying on.  The L83 G20 irons will soom be available to you, I'd suggest giving them a go.

ChinaJohn's method seems to go against my theory and still work somehow, he must have Seve levels of feel.

I almost always play this hole allowing for a lot of run out.  For the front pin I aim to land a few yards past the big ridge near the front of the green with plenty of b/s and the ball will usually roll somewhere close as long as I judge the power right.  For the back pin I aim to land right of the bunker and let the ball run through towards the hole.  This leaves a fairly straight putt but it will be downhill so care is needed.  Going directly at the hole only really seems to be an option if there's some head wind.  Not too much though as then it becomes barely reachable.
