Yes, you're correct that there should be a confirmation page that pops up. And yes, it sounds like they should make it a bit more obvious about the cost.
But, as you mentioned, customer service made the situation right for you. I've found customer service to be terrific. Additionally, at the risk of sounding overly critical, I'm still a bit surprised that a person would think gifting of balls would be free.
I mean, you already knew that balls, other than the starter ones, cost money. Why would anyone think that gifting would be free? If that were the case, players would never buy balls. They would simply gift them to each other.
