I don't mind the lack of prevailing winds.  I still strongly disagree that random for every player on each hole is the best way.  I still firmly believe that in tournament play, different players should get similar winds on like holes.  I do not mind if I have two holes in the same direction and I get headwind on one and tailwind on another.  I just want the rest of the players to have the same.

It's best as it is, for the reasons given by King of the Course. It's the same for everybody so where's the beef?

But that's just it Piz, being random it is NEVER the same for everyone.  High winds on all the courses are the absolute worst in single play tournies.  Bethpage being but one example.  You get favourable winds and you're knocking short and mid irons at pins.  I get unfavourable winds and I'm laying up on several par 4's.  You beat me by 2, but in comparison I probably played the better round by 4.

If only it was "the same for everybody".  It doesn't have to be EXACTLY the same.  Everyone gets a headwind on hole X.  It might be from the left, right, or head on.  Everyone gets a tail wind on hole Y.  Everyone gets a left to righter on hole Z.  Strengths vary - as they do now.  But it would be a hell of a lot fairer.  And it toally debunks the issue that is the only lame excuse for keeping it as it is.

Yep, how can it be the same for everyone?

If you play the St Andrews Back 9 RG - heavy winds this month, you could be the 'lucky' player who gets a tailwind on 10, 12, 18 - so you can drive all those greens, you've eagle shots, almost certain birdies, get a favourable wind on 14 again you've eagle chance, good wind on 17 birdie chance.  Without playing too well  you should be -3 or -4 under (at least)

If you're 'unlucky' you've probably struggled to -1 or -2

How is this fair in a pay to enter tournament?

Well thanks Forrestleigh, I wasn't sure whether that was the case having only played a couple of RG's.

But if it is,  then no way will I enter as that is unfair.

A level playing field is the least we can expect for our money.

Just a question...Do you think it's fair  during an LPGA / PGA event  that the morning group may be blessed with little or no wind and pleasantly receptive greens, while the afternoon group may encounter swirling wind , possibly rain , or just a much firmer green  ? You must play what's in front of you babe..  .just say , "this is what I drew today" and go to work. Tomorrow , you may get the early tee time. In the BIG picture ,  everyone gets a taste of it...good and bad.

Yes I think its fair, because everyone who tees off knows what the conditions are, its unlikely to change 180 in a single round.

here in single play tournaments especially over 9 holes, random wind means you can play but if you get the 'unlucky draw' you have no chance at all of winning
