    WGTicon:
setting same winds for every hole is simply unrealistic and will be used, when friends share winds and tailor clubs for it (ie adding 4th wedge and dropping driver).

When players step out of the clubhouse, before headed to the first tee, they can judge wind and make bag changes prior to starting a tourney anyway... what's the difference?

And I'm not as concerned about RGs.  My thoughts are more for the Opens.  I fully intend to be playing in those next summer, and I'd like to think no one will have essentially a several hundred yard shorter course than I do because they get favorable winds.  Coming up short in a once-a-year competition due to dumb, blind luck ain't too cool.

WGT, stop listening to the 'random wind' posts.  It is much better to have similar if not identical conditions for all entrants in a given competition.

This will take realism away and the word will be spread about that deceptive wind to what direction and angle it REALLY IS, giving the later players an easier chance to birdie

Wait... explain how it is 'realistic' for me to be on one hole, with wind blowing 27 MPH in my face, while another player, playing the same tourney at the same time, is on the same hole with a 28 MPH tailwind?

Again, as has been mentioned... in Real Life (it's the basis for 'realism'), players know before they tee off on a given day which way the wind is blowing, how strong, etc.  And it is blowing the same for everyone on the course at that time.

Random winds for every player on every hole is in fact that absolute least realistic way to do things.

Last bit from me:  I'd much prefer we both have a 27 MPH headwind that you know is coming and I don't, over me having a 27 MPH headwind and you having a 27 MPH tailwind.

Which one is the bigger advantage?

    hi

in the long run=many tournaments played. this time you have 30 head on sta #9 and next time others have it and you have some helping tail.

You see, are you going to call icon a CHEAT as well for mentioning it?????

I really can't see this arguement, it sounds to me like one of those that is trotted out as gospel and few really think about it or post against it.

Where are these 'friends' who having payed their entrance fee for a ready go, then feel they should give the wind conditions to someone who (presumably with this knowledge) will go onto the course and beat their score, thus lowering any potential winnings?

I know we like to think we have a great community, and we do generally, but if any of these altruistic golfers want to give me any insider information let me know, you can be my friend (joking)

IMO random winds don't even out - low, moderate or heavy

Question - do you get favourable winds 50% of the time on St Andys 9 & 10?  and I don't mean crosswinds, how many times do you get headwinds or tailwinds, if you take out the crosswinds I bet you get more headwinds than tailwinds, if I'm right then holes not only have random winds built in, but also another variable regarding direction

lets say you go out and crap the bed so to speak in the RG or lets take it one step furter in one of the opens or both.    Your gonna tell me that the info doesnt get leaked?  Or say a person plays in the open and is not eligible for the prize, could easily post ever wind setup in here for all too see.

It just doesnt make sense to have all the same winds, it can be easily manipulated!

Now to solve this the Opens need to be 4 rounds, then all players will see all winds.

    Cheers,

Agree with this. Also, I think there is a limit to "realism"  with any online game, and you don't want to wish for too much of it - you just might get it LOL.

With regard to wind conditions, the better analogy IMO is with a bridge tournament where the same arrangement of cards is used for all players. This depends on secrecy though. I'd like to think that, in the big tournies at least, each player was confronted by the same problems in the same way. Be great for post-mortems.

But and but and but... perhaps the 50/50 suggestion has some merit.

I agree, this should be the case, but it could quite easily end up (if you're really unlucky) you have four really bad rounds with wind, and someone else has four really good rounds - I don't buy the theory that it evens itself out

I agree, this should be the case.  But only if you buy into the theory that this evens itself out over a number of rounds.

I don't buy this, I still think you can get four bad rounds of wind and someone else can get four good, or better rounds.  So in a big tourney you are at a disadvantage from the get go.

It does not have to be many holes really, if you have four/five better winds per 18 holes that can be a huge advantage, the 5's at St Andrews reachable in 2 with following wind, 9 and 10 reachable in 1 with the right wind, 17 birdie chance with the right wind prob certain par, strong headwind you're playing only for par, and normally a wedge in approach for par putt
