It certainly looks like fairway, and you can see the fringe ahead of you. Even if it were fringe, it would be whole lots of fringe to putt through, which is never a good idea (think of the backside of Oakmont 3). Also, on Bethpage 13 that shot is definitely uphill, so your chip shot is not going to get away from you if you are careful. The basic issue of putting from the fringe was resolved by WGT last year in favor of allowing reasonable putting from fringe, but still you can't expect to plow through a long stretch of fringe without killing the putt.

BTW, is crud a word known on real golf courses?

Not sure, but I do say "crap" at least 20 times a round;)

It _is_ fringe at the start, with fairway in front of it, reaching onto the "green", check out the spot.

I agree that a putt may not be the best shot from that fringe, possibly not from many fringes.

I was only astounded to see fairway between fringe and green...

Yep, that may have been where I was in the past, I remember the first time I tried putting from that "fairway" spot, just off the green, thinking it was just mis-labled and  ball went thud.

Ever since I have chipped it.
