It could only work if the photos have already been taken when the course was prepared for WGT. Unless they revisit the course.

I've always wondered why that is?  I mean we can putt from anywhere on the greens and see the slopes and breaks.  I'd bet it's more a matter of time and effort to implement rather than needed additional photos.

Maybe Icon can confirm or deny?

True, you can putt from anywhere, however, generally all pictures you see while on the green point in the general vicinity of the current hole location.... So picture it like hundreds(maybe not that many) of cameras in a big circle around the hole at different radii.  They would need pics like this for each hole location.  If they did not have the foresight to do this (which I imagine was the case for Kiawah) then they would have to go back an get more.

*Disclaimer... pure speculation on my part, but I think this is the main issue.

I understand but..say I am 40 feet out on a hole (any green, any course) and I putt it to 20 feet away..

Is it difficult to make a hole there?

Just asking as I have no knowledge in this..

And (just to lend credence to my opinion), I can be at a hole on any green and putt away from the hole as well and watch the ball take the breaks etc.

I just don't understand (can I borrow your disclaimer:) ) why additional pics would be needed if the greens are mapped for roll away fro the hole as well

Have a look at the picture below of Kia #12.... It's no "Andyson" but it'll have to do =).  The pin at the back is the current hole location, the pin on your left (right side of the green) is a possible new location to express my point.  Click here for full size

The two blue arrows represent the actual camera angles of this particular shot and approximately where the camera was located when the shot was taken (give or take a couple of feet)  as seen by the forward and reverse views while putting.

The red and orange arrows show where the camera would (approximately) need to be if the pin were located at the front right hole location speculated by me.

To my knowledge (and I have been all over these greens) there are no camera angles that would even come close to the red and orange arrows, let alone give you a straight on look at the pin to avoid the nasty skewed read.

Now picture having to cover the full 360 degree spectrum around the hole location and at different distances..... I would speculate that there is probably 50-100 shots just looking at the pin alone for putting..... times 18 holes..... times x # of pin locations..... times whatever other factors I may not have thought of.....

Seems like a lot of work now that I break it down......  WOW!

Try this exercise.... in a practice round, get your ball 3 feet from the hole and putt sideways about 2 feet, staying 3 feet from the hole.... The picture changes.... rinse, repeat.  How many unique pictures did you see?  (I bet you run out of strokes before you see them all)

Try it again for 20 feet away, putting longer each time, but staying about 20 feet from the cup.

    I get it now Alee.

    Makes sense with your explanation.

Thanks for taking the time to lay it out.

Not bad Nanook, not bad at all!  It took me a full page almost on this thread back in 2011.  Nice work Lee!

No idea man.... the example I used on #12 was my own conjecture.... But a back right hole location on #17 is bound to give people heart attacks!!! That hole is daunting enough now for a lot of people!!
