New clubs. Huge difference.

I have been trying to conquer The Olympic Club with my tried and true Taylormade Tour Preferred Full Set (L64+).   I found it damn near impossible to shoot below 77.  It was so frustrating!   Club distances were all wacky.  I could not count on anything.  I was very used to these clubs -- been using them for 4-5 months.

Then I rented the Ping G20 set.  UNBELIEVABLE.  I can shoot par on The Olympic Club now.  I think it really sucks that these clubs make that much difference.  Seems unfair.  My Taylormade clubs are good.  Why don't they work at The Olympic Club?

It's an entirely different course with irons that don't have a high trajectory. Your TMs don't. That's the biggest difference in those 2 club sets and Olympic has a lot of severe elevation changes that make a huge difference in how the club's flight arc and resulting landing are affected.

You would do well to ditch the TMs in favor of those G20s, not just for Olympic but for the other courses too. Holes like BPB 5 and 15 become birdie opportunities.  :-)

Give that man a cigar! Not only is YJ right but take YJ's advice!, As you progress you will find that the high trajectory is the difference between ok rounds vs great rounds.

LOL. Notice I didn't say anything about birdie opportunities becoming bogeys and worse on 15.  ;-)

I have the L63 TP's.  In about 15 attempts, my best on Olympic is 64 with them.  Shot that 4 or 5 times.  I steadily improved from a 70/72 down to a 64... using L45 Cal i(z).  And... on my best rounds, I'd still miss 3-4 putts inside 10-12 feet.  My suggestion is... you have to pay VERY close attention to elevation and wind when playing the TP's.

That being said, I just got the L59 G20's.... On my first two attempts, 67, 64... still missing putts... the greens on Olympic are full of odd random, "freak occurences".  I'd rather putt on Oakmont... where it's faster but more predictable.

The difference between the TP's and L59 G20's... the long irons... 3, 4, 5,... fly higher and land softer.  There are a few shots, 3-5 depending on wind... where the G20's are better on Olympic.  HOWEVER, they are MUCH MUCH better on a course like BPB back 9... where I've finally reached the green and birdied #15.  I could barely break par from Legend tees on BPB back 9... but with the G20's... I think I can consistently shoot 32.

One more thing... the G20's play a little shorter than the TP's, especially with full back spin... so to take maximum advantage of the higher trajectory, and get the most out of the clubs, you pretty much have to use Nike L48 balls.

Spaghetti - while you are right about the level 59 G20 set being a little better than the level 64 TP set, I am guessing that the original poster was referring to the level 83 G20 set which is even better than the level 59 G20 set.  Also, the Callaway level 33 spin ball works just fine with these sticks.  I only use the Nike's now for the slower meter with the R11 irons.

We have tested the club here at WGT and certain sets are better for certain courses for sure.  The trajectory as mentioned before is a big one and so is carry distance and spin.  But on some courses you just need the sheer distance and power.

Yah L83 I guess.  I suppose those are a little longer and carry better with full back spin than these L59's.  I that case... the L33 Calli's would be just fine.  Not so if you want to get the most out of the L59's with full back spin... which you need full back spin cuz they don't stop as good as the L63 TP's.

*What I mean is... the L63 TP 3/4i will stop ok  with full back spin if hitting to level surface... but you are rarely hitting to level surface.  So far in my experience, you need the distance and spin of the Nike balls to make the distance and stopping adjustment easier with the L59's cuz they play a little shorter than TP with Calli's.
