Come on WGT.... Really?!?!?! Just finished the front 9 on round 2 and had one cross wind... on #5..... the rest were strong head winds between 5 and 7 oclock. Talk about over before it even started. WOW.
Got pretty much the same thing.
High wind in single play tournaments is indeed problematic as reported many times (notice that I am not whining at all :), I just report ideas found in the forum which I think might improve the gaming experience here). Depending on the wind set, you can have a difference of several strokes (I guess from 4 to 6) while playing the same quality.
There are several possibilities that have been proposed. Two of them could work in my view:
- All players have winds in the same quadrant. Only the precise direction (within that quadrant) and the wind speed would change (within some range as it is now) from one hole to another.
- One could take into account the real fairway orientation. At hole 1, the wind direction would be random (or within a given quadrant for all players) and for all other holes, the wind direction would be determined from that random direction and the real fairway orientation.
I think both are pretty easy to implement. I think proposition 2 (with wind on hole 1 within a given quadrant for all players), would be quite realistic. In general, the course design is such that it even out any wind advantage (you will get roughly the same number of holes where wind helps or where wind hold the ball if, of course, the wind direction is roughly constant during your round which is quite often the case). Ocean course Map.
As it is now, the way high wind is implemented lead to some frustration among many players. Using one of the two propositions above, which have been proposed many times, would just avoid such frustration. If you struggle on a given hole due to the wind, at least you know it will be the same for other players and if they do better, then they are just better.
I don't think it would make the game any easier. You still have to shot your round whatever the wind set. I don't think also that the problem that some players would share the information is really an issue. First of all, you don't know the precise direction or speed of the wind. Secondly, in real golf, you can have a good idea of which kind of wind you will get before starting your round.
