    zagraniczniak:

Consider that we are playing Oakmont today under championship conditions - for those of us who aren't champions - and, as far as I can see, from the championship tees (e.g. the 299-yard par 3). Perhaps in the future there will be a range of iterations, with different green speeds and the like.

    Yes there will.

This is meant to simulate U.S. Open conditions. Once the tournament is over they will open up the course. It was the same last year with BPB.

    Just have fun with it.

You will find your game will thank you for it.

CRITICAL MASS 3:32 PM EDT (12:32 PM WGT/PDT)

I have played Oakmont off and on all day.  I am now at CRITICAL MASS with it.

Translation:  I love it BUT - I am sick of looking at it - for this day, anyway.  I will take my Day 1 low score of 75 as a worthy accomplishment...in spite of the fact that Oakmont is frustrating in all the right ways.  It will NOT give up its secrets easily - particularly not the secrets related to its "TOURNAMENT" Green Speeds.

This will take days, weeks, and even months to iron out.  I am content and PLEASED with this challenge.

If I am on WGT later, I am probably "relaxing" on an easy course like the Back 9 of Bethpage.  <eg>

If I get a second wind for Oakmont MAYBE some more much much later.  Certainly tomorrow.  And the next day and the next and the next.

Very pleased with the course and just now beginning to notice some "other changes" that came in the night.  (Just one example:  "Flagstick Hidden" now has replaced "Flagstick Removed" when you pull out the flagstick.  No idea what made this change necessary - but I noticed it.

    Best Regards and PLAY HARD....AtlantaCoaster

How do you remove the flagstick?

    Hi Rowan....

On the game screen...in the upper right corner near where it shows you the Yardage and the Wind - there is a little light blue flag icon.  CLICK on it and the Flagstick will be removed from the hole.  You will actually get more short PITCH/CHIP shots IN the hole if you start doing this.

The most obvious "reminder" you will receive is when you have a real close one that BOUNCES OFF the stick and rolls away.  When that happens enough times, you start to get in the habit.  LOL - I did.

Many of those that currently bounce off of it will drop in - but not all.

    Have Fun, AtlantaCoaster

How many chances in a lifetime does one get to play a championship course set up for an Open?  This is your chance.  Embrace it.  Score poorly, but do your best.  Embrace it again.  And then go have a cocktail and pat yourself on your back.  You now know what it's like to be a pro or top-ranked amateur.  This is not Saturday morning golf at your local public course.

    Flashback exactly one year.

Same exact types of play-related difficulties and so forth as when Bethpage rolled out.  "Can't reach the greens in Regulation"  "Greens are TOO FAST" and so on.

Precisely right, DMM...it is SET UP to be extremely difficult.

For what it is worth, I failed to qualify LAST YEAR - missed the cut by 1 stroke!  It's that tough.

    EllisSpice:
Although, if last year is anything to go by, the cut line will be 70 by the US Open comes round.

I think this might be a generous estimate. I'm betting something like -3 or -4. I got 68 the first time through and I'm a flake about notes and stuff. Players that take the time, like I know Mr.Lee is doing right now, to learn where to hit or not hit the ball are going to be the ones pushing 60 and fighting it out at the end.

I think this year's Open at WGT is going to be a doozy. I just wish there was some way to watch the fireworks besides the leaderboards.

Yeah, I shot a 69 my first time thru, no thanks to the different green speed.   Cut line is probably going to be around the -6 mark since this is an unlimited play competition.

When you're off the green you can 'remove the flagstick'. When you're on the green, you can 'hide the flagstick'. I'm pretty sure no changes were made.
