seems to me the down hill is ~ 25% faster than 'very fast' Whats odd though is that uphill seems more like 25% slower???

    Am I imagining that?

This course should be played conservatively to par.

Definitely look to land the ball on the green in a manner where you are putting uphill.

On some holes I actually aim for the fringe or rough beside the green so I can use my wedge to get close.

If you are not putting uphill or have a straight line to the hole then going straight for the hole is a mistake especially outside of 12ft.  It sounds strange but aim your putt in a direction that will land you on an uphill second putt.  It's worth the sacrifice as it will eliminate your 3-putt.

Going right for the hole on approach will add strokes for sure.  There are some definitely birdie holes and some par holes that you will be lucky to birdie.

    Keep practicing and good luck!

Any Master's have any tricks on putting on the slippery green's on Oakmont? It is very hard to stop the ball and putt..

Truth be told it's silly for ANYONE to offer advice at this point. As of yet I don't see how anyone could possibly know. Most of the advice thus far is subjective and in the big picture terrible.

There is no physical or semantical way to define luck; It's completely non-linear. Unpredictable. Anyone shooting sub-par on this course is nothing more than just that; Lucky.

Blah blah statistics and equations here there.... such naivety and pomp.

Funny seeing people posting on this thread as if they're already experts. THE "authority". LOL!! Let's see them scorecards STUDS!

yea its all luck that some people are better at the game than you

    Hear, hear!   QFE...

Yea, it's amazing how the same people are always on top of the leaderboards...  must be their naivety and pomp...  did we forget skill?  I think so.

The more you play ... the luckier you get.

Oh my, what a course set up!  Tried for the first time today and shot an 86. (not too far off what I shoot on my home course!)  Totally baffling. Absolutely no forgiveness for hits just off the center mark, whether for woods, irons or putter.  Some very eccentric calculations for the putting on these greens.  Not a lot of consistency and the topographic grid doesn't seem as accurate.  A putt or two of mine today seemed to defy gravity as they curled against the grain!  Glad that we can play multiple times on the qualifying round, but I wish there was a stroke play practice set up for this course.  Even the real pros get to play a couple or three practice rounds before they start a tourney.  Oakmont is quite a challenge going in cold.  My 20 year old daughter is back from college and caught me cussing at my computer tonight.  "Good to see you enjoying the game!" she said in a very patronizing tone. No one understands.

I am amazed at the low rounds on the leaderboard that I see.  Do subsequent rounds overwrite your older (higher) score on the leaderboard?

    cheers

    Hi All,

What a monster of a course this is lol.

Had my first round last night for a 73. No practice , just straight into it !!  Out in 33 but blew up on the back 9. But I'm not to disappointed and am on the board, and can only get better from here.

As for the putting. Lets keep this dead simple, right ?? Based on my first round, hit your putts approx 30 to 40 % less power.

Just work on getting that first putt up close and taking out that 3 putt.  When you're in close try not to putt the break. Hit your putts with more power and take out the break altogether.

    Awesome course though. Congrats WGT.

    Cheers

    Doug

These rounds are the practice and qualifying rounds. You can try as many times as you like and your best score will always stay or your better score will replace it, as the case may be.

Play for fun, only 156 will qualify. I don't see myself being one of them but the courses are damn fun with this set up.

    Happy hitting

bogeyed the tenth and gave up!

Um, giving up to have a drink and run over to the forum for a bit of ignorance knocking "experts" that didn't give up and took 30 minutes or so to figure it out?

I'd show you the carded, posted first try 68 but I don't save my mediocre efforts and will always be happy to share what I learn with somebody else. Sorry.
