Oakmont #1 Approach?

  I was reviewing the thread on #2 and it got me to thinking about the back right pin on #1. It is an butt kicker for me.

  What is the proper position to place the ball. If you are pin high on the left it rolls down the slope. If you are in front it goes downhill back.

  I can't find a level fairly straight putt on this pin.

  can't watch the replay as i have a saved game that I can't get to right now. Would appreciate a strategy for playing this hole better. Hardly ever birdie it.

  Nope - not on that one.  Just land directly in front of the pin with full backspin and it will leave a slightly downhill putt or if it rolls just past then an uphill putt.  The only place(s) to have a semi straight putt on that hole.

  Never gonna happen - that approach is a lottery most times.  If memory serves me correct, then the only "easy" putts are :

  1) Pin high left (very narrow margin say 08h30 to 09h30 - if you imagine a clock face with the pin at the centre)

  2) Short and slightly right (say 04h00 to 05h00).  

  Long is slightly better than pin high right, and short and left is v.difficult.

  3) Any approach where you can keep it within 4 foot of the pin.

  The margin of error is tiny, and with that elevation drop, any wind totally exacerbates the spin, making yardages a nightmare to control.

  No doubt that I can't hit my "spot" every time - but at least I know what I am aiming for and that is what the original poster was asking.  My goal is to hit just barely to the right of pin and uphill from it about 1-2 yards with full backspin.  I have holed more than a few doing it this way.  The replay linked was hit less than 10 minutes after first reading the post. Missing on either side is bad - period.  Miss to the right and the ball will likely roll to the fringe leaving an uphill left to right breaker that will run downhill at the cup (and well beyond if you aren't careful).  Miss to the left and the ball will roll further left and downhill leaving an uphill right to left putt that is just as bad.

  Finally got to take a look at the replay and it was a fine shot. I stuck the ball within 3 ft behind the hole last night and it luckily held. Made the bird but it still was a bender and wasn't a gimme by any means.
