Lol, thanks for the help guys, I just used TS for the very 1st time on my drive and got in the 400y club (by inches). Shot par on the hole though.

U hit the ridge just perfect.

Here is how to play STA #18 in a strong wind - with TS of course

Don't forsake top spin when the wind is with you, either. Just like wind influences draw on putts, it can help speed the ball along the ground, especially if you're landing in a downhill fairway like Oakmont  and CCC have. Oak #10 is a good example. Remember, too, the carry is knocked down with top spin so don't shoot yourself in the foot trying to carry and run.  :-)

backspin with the wind will give the ball lift/carry and more yards over flat/uneven gound. topspin into wind can cut through the wind giving more yards but with this shot the ball will not get the same height and will not carry the same yards as backspin. have a go at this and you will see & uderstand.

useing topspin into a green can stop the ball just as close to the pin/flag as ueing backspin without the lag/spinback as backspin can give.

If you read the entire thread you would see that this has been argued and proven false in most cases.

As for approaches on the green, it depends on the speed ans slope.

It has? Might be some misunderstanding going on here.

Yes, look at the flux players that have came back stating that they now use a variety of different spins to achieve max distance off the tee.  Top spin or back spin for max driving distance was the initial argument.

Now, max driving distance can be achieved with top spin, as our 400 yard drivers in htis thread have just figured out.

As for everyday play, max driving distance means absolutely nothing.  The only time anyone needs to have a max out is on a reachable par 4 or a long par 5.  Otherwise, you stick yourself inbetween clubs and have to choke up or push the distance barrier.

This is by far the best advice.  Deciding on what spin to use on each drive is a waste of time and brainpower except perhaps hook or fade..  The difference in distance would normally be only 10 to 25 yards and your time is better spent determining where you want to land your shot. for me, I am just as accurate with a 6 Iron as a 9 Iron.
