I see
.5x.5 squares = 8 (breakdown of the center "1" squares)
1x1 squares = 18 (4x4=16 making the big "4" square + 2 in the center)
2x2 squares = 9 (3 rows, offset by 1 vertical, containing 3 each, offset by 1 horizontal)
