    bubbadork:

Andyson is correct; the decompression is done on the local PC. For total effectiveness one must compare the time saved in transmission to the time expended for decompression. Typically, one would make a net gain.

Generally (with appropriate settings), this will affect load times but not meter stutter.

I disagree BD, anything that adds to CPU processing could affect the meter.  That's why reducing CPU usage by eliminating unnecessary processes (like closing the forum page while playing in the game client helps reduce stutter.

But for the OP Gerry, chances are good IMO that WGT already compresses many of its larger files.  This Adobe article indicates to me that Action Script (AS) ( a language used by WGT to code the game ) supports file compression.  GZip is supported by AS but the default is Zlib a similar compression method.

Adobe article on Compressing files and data

The answer for the OP is, its likely WGT already compresses its larger files and that's going to shorten transmission times, which makes the game load faster.  But at some cost to our PC's computing power.

I appreciate all the info.  However, (My last reply) YES it may help or NO it may do harm.

    Thanks

I can't answer that with confidence, because I haven't tried it. I still do not recommend it. You won't get a "yes or no" answer to that, only the results from people who may or may not have tried it.

    Make your own educated decision.

Gerry, compression is already being done by WGT using the Zlib algorithm. (Similar to the Gzip method.)

Hey guys, please keep this thread free of chatter so that gerryniswonger can get the help he needs.

Our "chatter" as you call it was on topic to the original post asking for advice on using Gzip.

And IMO, you took it off topic trying to turn it into a "Let's fix Gerry's PC" clinic. But that's your right as a moderator. So be it.

Andy I stand corrected regarding gzip or zlib files uncompressing on the PC.....My initial thought you were comparing Zip files which can contain megabyte  files decompressing to gzip files decompressing which contain Kb's of information. In other words I read your post wrong.

I did run across a tidbit of information regarding Norton Internet suite not allowing gzip files access. I am researching that a bit further.

Andyson, you are correct that decompressing requires cpu power. However, if preloading is turned off in options, than the gathering and decompression of the information has taken place before the swing.

If you monitor your cpu performance with Task Manager throughout the time from switching to a new hole to the point where you are ready to adjust the swing meter, you can see these actions clearly.

There's no guarantee the processing is completed before the swing.  And if you are familiar with my prior posts about the meter you'd know I do monitor CPU usage, intensely.

But to continue further would be off topic.

looks to me that Andy tried (and did) to explain it without using a thesaurus

As in my very first reply...it's not your choice to make/something you can do. It's about the size of files that are loaded from the wgt server. WGT, owning and maintaining the site, chooses if using GZIP compression is any good or not. I can imagine it's wise not to.

So, don't be worried. You couldn't do anything with this, even if you would like to.
