Tracy, at the Elite the percentage of participation in tourneys is probably in a similar range to what you mentioned. But maybe the percentage is not so important as the number, because you need a certain critical mass to make any tourney worthwhile.

The deviation in the thread into the topic of VEM is indirectly relevant. If you look at the patent application for VEM, it is identified as a method of maintaining players' interest in the game, basically by continuing to increase the challenges but also allowing players to continue improving their results by their equipment becoming more accurate = the opportunity to score better.

Thus VEM fights boredom with the game. Nonetheless, there is bound to be some curve of interest in any computer game, like a romance tailing off in the end. If you have the same country club members, over time most of them will show less desire and play less. So you can encourage members who have lost interest to look elsewhere and bring in new people.

But the Elite does have some basic membership requirements such as a prospective member being expected to be on WGT for a minimum time (to weed out multi-accounters, to a certain extent also hacks or players with little track record).

Thanks Courteney, thats still pretty good with a large membership. Interesting the St A's attracts more and a good point. I suppose I am odd that I don't worry about averages and stats and prefer to create harder tournaments, especially for higher tiers and easier for low tiers. But then you see the leaderboard and see WDs.

Yes everyone has different expectations, some player just like to play socially with members (A/S) some like credit tournys etc and you can never please everyone all of the time. But it would be nice to have greater numbers playing free tournaments the majority of the time, so if anyone has ideas they would be appreciated by all, I think.

By the way, you must have lax rules in your clubhouse...if the shoes you were wearing before you grabbed the caclulator were your golf shoes:)

    FBudd:
You can remove me from your CC, i dont like your tournaments.

Not bad coming from someone who hasnt played a single CC tourney or in fact participated in the club forum to learn of the tourneys with major prizes.

    Consider it done.

...my percentage just went up :)

Very interesting post and one that we have also debated at length in our own CC...

Although I am not an owner, I am one of group of players in our CC affectionately known as the "Fixers" who organise our weekly and Seasonal events...

We have just have undergone a Mass Cull of players for not taking part in CC events or posting on forums. Typically we have about 100-120 active players in the CC although the capacity is 250..Current membership stands at 186 although this will soon drop to around 120...

Our weekly events (4 free strokeplay and 1 CTTH event) attract between 50-70 players most weeks although some weeks it is lower, so our % participation against the 120 active members is around 25% - 60% and our Seasonal 12 round leagues which run over 6 weeks each season attract between 40-60% participation levels based on the 120 membership we are soon to have...

We have 6 MAJORS each year (4 round 72 hole events with cuts just like the real thing) and that has drawn in around 50-60 players per round and we have a ranking list leading to an end of Season Ryder cup (England v's Rest of the World) for the top 12 players and a Walker Cup (same teams) for players in 12th -24th place on the rankings.

Our biggest problem and one we haven't resolved is getting new members onto the forum (am sure it is the same in all CC's).. That to me is a key in getting players involved as so many just don't know what is happening in the CC rightly or wrongly .So many players join and then don't want to get involved for whatever reason (you wonder why they join in the first place?). We encourage players to come and say hello and it is amazing how many still prefer to opt out of doing this..Tiz a shame as they miss out on so much..

Just recently launched a new website in the hope of getting more players involved and getting information to prospective new members. That for me is still the key without doubt.

    Cheers guys

David aka Fixer 2 in the UKGE :)

Can I just say to anybody that's thinking about joining a club that you only get out what you put in. Some people seem to think they join a club to be entertained. I had someone leave today after about a week in the club saying that the camaraderie wasn't the same as at his old club. So I checked his profile page and he had lots of friends on his list from his old club but he had made no effort to friend any of my members. My point here is to at least make an effort and post on the club forum now and again and you'll soon be one of the gang. Thank you.

Totally agree with the above point Courteney...We have had exactly the same experience and just as I put in my message above...Getting players onto the forum is for me what it is all about..If you can get that, you are well on the way in getting more active players for sure and building some great friendships over time..Have given up on the number of times I have posted on peoples wall asking for feedback on why they don't get active and no response...hence Operation Mass Cull lol..

    Hi David,

I joined WGT in Feb. of this year, I have played everyday since joining. I was a member of a country club for a little over a month, but there was never any really good participation in tourneys, and also they did not have much to choose from. I have looked at the UKGE website and I must say it is amazing. All of you do a tremendous job with your club. I am an American player and I see that your club is open to all nations. I am really interested in joining as all your tournaments, and leagues are very appealing to me. I sent a membership request last night 6/5/13. I would gladly participate in the forum.

Well said Courteney and David, I totally agree. I wish to thank everyone for their responses, our club is small,(50), so guess our percentages are in line with everyone else. Again thank you.
