    Hi,

I am just looking at what is the best way to play out of weeds 60-70%?

Obviously I don't play many shots from the weeds, but I never seem to get the ball anywhere. Usually it scuffs a few yards and then hopefully I am in 40-50% which is rarely a problem (add a couple of yards to a pitch shot and your will be very close).

I guess I could use punch, but when I have used it under full club it does very much the same thing.

What am I supposed to do if I am 10 yards from the pin, 5 yards in the rough in 60-70%? I could try punch at 50 yards full club but I can't see it going anything less than 20 yards...

    Any advice?

Punch a wedge at the closest  shorter grass.

You won't get any better advice than that.

How hard would you hit it?

    Dear Roger,

As a damned fine TL, I am sure you have forgotten this game actually has 60-70% rough :)

Mark my words, as a hack-legend I can confirm this rough does exist, contrary to many TL's beliefs!

For me the most effective way out is a punch, full topspin and usually using a wedge and only having the goal to get back on the fairway, so even can mean aiming backwards or sideways to find the closest bit of fairway. Usually this means hitting full power and if you need to choke down on the power, the chances are the ball will not go far. Also this is if you have decent wedges - starters clubs and I would do exactly the same and hope like hell the ball gets out.

Oh and make sure you hit the ding!

Get back on the fw and you still have a chance of making par - play percentages.

The only place I have seen that type of rough that close to the hole is # 13 merion. The only way to keep it close there is to hit the flag stick. And I would probably hit full shot shortest wedge..

I don't usually get into that type of trouble, but if I do....  It would be nice to to have the knowledge I suppose.  I agree with ya...  off the tee in the heavy rubbish... play safe, even if you have to hit backwards.  Close to green is a total different kettle of fish.

Not sure about the damned fine TL, but thx...  maybe just another TL.....lol

Riger, a very fine TL, and a very fine TL is Roger.

Roger gave me one of the finest putting tips I have ever had, and it has stood me in good stead ever since.

I believe that is what the OP is talking about. The heavy weeds around some of the greens at Marion. Nothing except a punched wedge will move it and then unless you get very lucky you end up well past the hole. The weeds around the bunker and green @ #10 Merion is the main reason I started to play # 10 using my 3 iron off of the tee there. Trying to drive it and ending up in the heavy weeds killed many a good round there.

I once punched my HL CG64 FBS at about 85% power out that chit.  Stopped next to the hole from 11 yards. Could gone anywhere and if I were in it again?????
