The fairway on the first finishes downhill (I changed to a putter to see the slope; it's clearly there) ... but my ball never EVER rolls downhill. And when I get close to (or on) the 1st green the grid shows a right to left spin - only my ball never follows the downward slope either. Any ideas?

This is a difficult hole with Starter equipment. You'll hardly hold the green with the second shot due to trajectory and lack of spin, and when you play shorter, the ball may stick short of the green, like glued. The area just in front of the green has such characteristic in many places.

Until you have access to good(!) equipment, look for the best place next to the green. It may be in the rough just left or right of the respective holes, potentially better than straight behind the green(?)

BTW: Is there an English term for "the area just in front of (and around) the green" which has an intermediate cut? In German, it's called "Vorgrün" - "before the green".

    Thank you!

On www.golf.about.com I find apron, collar, and - of course - fringe, as I stated before! <gd&r>

Perhaps this will help...I have a replay saved on my profile dated 6-2-2010 at Oakmont #1 that will show you the lay of that down hill approach. The ball trail shows everything you described, perfectly.

That is a beauty, aw, but I think mine is closer to what the OP is thinking of.
