    With regards to "Ale", SP ... it's only in the US where they distinguish a beer with an alcoholic content greater than 4.99 Ale ...

    To my European friends ... if you order a pint of Guinness ... do you refer to it as "Ale" or "Beer"?

    Quite simply;  'A pint of Guinness, barman, please.'

    If I asked for a beer or an ale I would then be asked by the person serving "any particular brand?"

    After about 4/5  hours the normal response to requests for more alcohol usually brings that ole refrain;

    "Get oot -yer barred!"

    To my mind Guinness is a stout.

    Others from different parts of Europe may well have their own opinions.

    Have a nice day y'all!
