One reason is with no spin on ball the shot goes further than full back. Off the tee, full back spin on the ball gives close to the yardage on the clubs.
1. The ball flies farther off the tee than off the fairway.
2. You are hitting high distance balls.
3. The pin on Merion 13 is placed very close to the back bunker.
4. Merion 13 does seem to play a little shorter than its stated distance.

I did play the hole again and it was front pin so I did try the 9 iron punch with full bs and I ended up within 2 ft of pin, so u do learn something new every day.....lol
