  OK, I'm not a 'real' golfer but I've managed to bluff my way through this virtual golf malarkey quite well so far but now you have me.

  I've read about 'below the hole' several times and I"m confused, what does it mean. It cannot be literal as even I can figure out subterranean golf isn't an option. So does it mean don't go past the hole, as in below in 2D or what?

  Explanations in simplese for a  realgolf 101 please.

   

  Targeting approach shot landing areas around the hole that leave uphill putts for birdies. On some holes that means landing a little short of the hole. Some holes that means landing either left or right of the hole depending on green slope. Least often we need to hit the approach long, or past the hole to have the uphill putt. Below the hole meaning at a lower elevation than the cup. It's considered easiest to putt uphill at the cup. GL

  +67 on you want to be putting uphill on Merion.

  I just want to add that it also helps to be somewhat aggressive when putting on Merion.

  Simple non technical answer is, any position on green that is an uphill putt.

  That may be north, south, east or west of the pin, depending on the greens slope.

  My personal opinion on the tournament set up for Merion is that there are some significantly unfair (some circles would say illegal) pin locations.  You should be able to have a ball come to rest and then stop within 18 to 24 inches of the cup.  There are at least 3 pin placements where you can have an uphill putt, putt the ball the needed distance, but if you miss the target the ball will stop and then begin rolling backward (sometimes all the way off the green).

  Again, I think it is totally unfair.
