"Re: the Road Hole, I'm kinda amazed you've only seen the back left pin. I usually get the middle pin and only rarely get the back left pin."

Could that be a tier thing? I've really never seen it any other position....

Yep. In rated play, it may be tier related.

I actually see the back pin much more often that the middle pin.

Sort of like the back pin on BPB #15, rarely see that pin.  I'm not sure what triggers the different pin placements.  It seems at STA they vary a good bit except for the middle pin on 17 and the front pin on 11, rarely see those two.

They're actually both back left, but one is directly behind the bunker and the other is just enough to the right that you can roll your shot right up to it in a straight head or tail wind, although it's a tight squeeze.

I'll admit that I don't know the difference between the pins on 18, if there even is one.

AFAIR, there's only one pin on #18 in full games. There's a second pin in the far back in CTTH though.

There are 2 pins on # 18 just like all the other 17 holes. But like 2 or 3 other holes the 2 pin placements are so close to each other it is hard to tell if they are different. The second pin on 18 is a little farther to the left that the original and you might only get it once out of 10 times playing.

Medium pins is just a mixture of hard and easy.

I understand that you think "hard" and "easy" denote the different sets? R u sure?

Once I tried a comparison between the pin settings (from the tips) at KIA#9.

    1) I set up a practice round "hardest tees", "easy pins", played eight holes, at #9, the front pin was present. o.k.

    2) New round, "hardest tees", "hard pins", played eight holes (yawn), expected the new back pin at #9, only to find the front pin again.

    Thus my statement remains unchanged:

"easy, medium, hard" says nothing, you may still get all pin locations.

99% of the time easy and hard pins are different, there is though that one time they might be the same.

As far as medium goes, Courtney is correct, its a mix of the two. And if you set up a tournament in your CC, using medium pins, player A may get the *hard* pin on a certain hole, while player B might get the *easy* pin on the same one.

What about a proof? Can you tell the hard and easy pins on any 9 hole stretch of any course? I'd like to check it out.

    1) Playing STA front 9 in practice mode a moment ago, "hard" and "easy" pins were identical in 6 of 9 cases. This makes you "one time the same" hard to believe.

And, what does this exception say about your rule of the game?

    2) During the "Tough It Out" tournaments we had to play practice mode to get the UEL, and experienced different pins though they were defined for fairness.

What about some arguments supporting your opinion?

Actually yes :-)  I run our CC's monthly Championship Tournament. Before i put it up, i play 18 holes 3 times from each of easy, hard and medium pins. Although i have now stopped doing medium after finding out they change from player to player in the same round.

When i do my practice run from each of the tees, i mark down, back left, front right, middle left, whatever the case may be.

This last month, for our April tournament on Merion, for the first time in a year playing all courses that allow for pin placement, were two pins the exact same for hard and easy.

Maybe next time i chart them out, they will change, i dont know, all i'm saying is that in my experience, 99% of the time, they are different. There is always that 1% though.

It would be great if WGT could put up a graphic of each location.
