OOOHHHHH, THAT par 3, I'm sorry, I gave you bad info thinking it was a different par 3...MY BAD!

On that hole you want to use Full Topspin with a tailwind! The overspin makes the ball sink faster like a pitchers curveball...the backspin keeps it in the wind longer thus it goes further....

Sorry, good luck next time you play it....let us know how it goes...

Oh Yeah, there is no such thing as a 9i with a max distance of 130, there is a MAX 9i and it doesn't have a Max 130 distance either...

I'm " lucky it only went as far as it did ", dude? Well, I guess so. If I were any luckier maybe that 130 yard max distance club would have gone 150 yards in that viscous 4mph tail wind

I think you're missing something crucial here. Jimbog alluded to it when he mentioned learning your stuff.

If you hit that shot with a free ball you'd probably be close. That Nike ball jumps off the face of the club and that 130 rating turns into something longer. Throw in some back spin for lift and make the wind more effective and carrying that bunker is more of a probability than not.

The key is learning how much more distance you get from those Nikes. In other words, how do they affect the rated yardage of the club? You have to learn this, it's really important.  I'm sure you'll know how to play that hole  next time, too.   ;-)

That made me think Dan...what if full topspin is applied downwind?

Fortunately, I found I had one of the Nike L40+ used by the OP in my bag.  I took it out to Merion 13 and again lucky to get a similar wind.  OP had 4 at 1 o'clock, I got 3 at 1 o'clock.

Stay with me now, I don't have the same VForged Nikes as the OP.  He has the L85, I have the L97s.  My 9I is rated 135 and my PW is rated 120.

I started with the PW.  I've mapped it from the tee with Cally L35s at 120 full back, and 127 no spin. Click links below for replay.

PW Results (using mulligans so same wind each shot):

No back/No top spin, full power, dinged:  went 127yds  7yards more than max full, as expected.

Full back spin, full power, dinged: went 117yds. 3yds less than max, and less than expected.

Full top spin, full power, slightly early: went 132yds. 12yds more than max.  Whoa!  I didn't expect that!

On to the 9I rated 135

    9I Results (using mulligan again):

I only wanted to try Full Top spin on the 9I, and after seeing the PW results I didn't want to lose a ball in the brush/trees behind the bunker.  Soo...I aimed at the far left side of the back bunker.

9I Full top spin, full power, slightly early:  went 149yds. 14yds more than max.

Conclusion, adding full topspin off a tee adds significant yardage. I would expect hitting a 130 club off a tee with full topspin to go 143 yds.

As far as the OP goes, IMO this post was all a wind up.

Exactly, at least that far, might even  " lose a ball in the brush/trees behind the bunker."

But, that's why the punch shot with the 8 iron is a better play...your spin adjustments are slight, and since you are punching, missing the ding has less effect on a punch shot that a full shot, especially when playing in higher winds...that hole is tough enough to par at times (depending on the leave), but IMO, punch is a better chance for bird, on a consistant basis.

    Andyson,

You're a thorough and knowledgeable dude. No one can ever take that from you. You have my vote if you decide to be a moderator or something.Sure no one will ever approach me for that vote, but it's yours if they do.

Full topspin 14 yards more than max, wow! I've only applied full stop spin a few times. Though I don't recall the results, I'll assume they were probably disastrous. Nothing new for me...

To everyone else - Tempers ran a little high here, myself included. Initially my OP was, I thought,  directed at and for WGT, I honestly didn't expect many. if any, non WGT Staff replies. And for those who truly tried to explain my confusion with, what I still consider, a very glitchy golf shot, I thank you.

Though it was given several times, I wasn't seeking advice on how to play that hole. I've aced that stupid hole once, very close several other times, I know how to play that shot. Only this time, during a Tournament round, I buried my self in a bunker with what I perceived  as a highly irregular ball flight/shot result.

Anyway, no hard feeling, I'm too stupid to remember anything long or hold a grudge anyway. Please forgive me if I got out of line.

    Oh! One more thing...

Spdemon, I am a Level 90 Legend. Best check yourself before you break y0self...

    Love ya, bro!

    Thanks everyone,

I get it Baggs, believe me I get it....LOL...but the OP hit a full 9I...no point showing him what a punch can do.  ;o)

Please, take a breath, rethink the situation, and try to collect yourself, and your reasoning prowess.

Time to follow your own advice. Did you see what Andyson did? Did you understand it? This is what I was talking about.  :-)

Why don't you have a practice yourself ..that way you wont need to ask and you will know how to play the shots you are asking about....just a suggestion with no harm intended before it get read indifferently.

    regards

    JFidanza:

This is something I've been wondering about: How much distance can you expect from the proshop balls (compared to the starter balls '0') and I asked the question in a new post called:

    Ball distance rating applies/means?

    http://www.wgt.com/forums/t/235790.aspx

I know the answer may require some detail and length but I haven't got a reply. I might try out some of those extra distance balls but I'd like to know a little more about it before I do.

The other question is 'Do the extra distance balls add distance to the Pitch also? Chip? Flop? etc?

And if they don't add extra distance to those shots or the putts I think that should be noted in the product description. I'll keep searching the forum and asking other players for answers.
