fatdan: On that hole you want to use Full Topspin with a tailwind! The overspin makes the ball sink faster like a pitchers curveball...the backspin keeps it in the wind longer thus it goes further....
That made me think Dan...what if full topspin is applied downwind?
Fortunately, I found I had one of the Nike L40+ used by the OP in my bag. I took it out to Merion 13 and again lucky to get a similar wind. OP had 4 at 1 o'clock, I got 3 at 1 o'clock.
Stay with me now, I don't have the same VForged Nikes as the OP. He has the L85, I have the L97s. My 9I is rated 135 and my PW is rated 120.
I started with the PW. I've mapped it from the tee with Cally L35s at 120 full back, and 127 no spin. Click links below for replay.
PW Results (using mulligans so same wind each shot):
No back/No top spin, full power, dinged: went 127yds 7yards more than max full, as expected.
Full back spin, full power, dinged: went 117yds. 3yds less than max, and less than expected.
Full top spin, full power, slightly early: went 132yds. 12yds more than max. Whoa! I didn't expect that!
On to the 9I rated 135
9I Results (using mulligan again):
I only wanted to try Full Top spin on the 9I, and after seeing the PW results I didn't want to lose a ball in the brush/trees behind the bunker. Soo...I aimed at the far left side of the back bunker.
9I Full top spin, full power, slightly early: went 149yds. 14yds more than max.
Conclusion, adding full topspin off a tee adds significant yardage. I would expect hitting a 130 club off a tee with full topspin to go 143 yds.
As far as the OP goes, IMO this post was all a wind up.
