    YankeeJim:
Heh-I guess last night answered your question.  :-)

Uhhhhhh, yeah......you could say that. He was pretty darn good. I think if the Yankee's and Phillies end up going to the Series then I do believe it may be a more competitive Series then I once thought. Especially if the Yankee's pitch the way they have been. I would still give the edge to the Phillies though.

The year of the pitcher? Yeah I would say so. C.J. Wilson had a strong performance for the Rangers. Andy Petite was well, Andy Petite. And Tim Lincecum proved why he has 2 CY Young's to his name.

C.J. Wilson went 6 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, and struckout 7. Keeping the Rays bats quiet once again was huge for Texas as they have the League Championship series just out of their grasp. One more win and they are in. Who saw this coming? Not me. I thought at best the Rangers would be tied in this series at this point if not down 2-0. But unforuantley the umpires have played their part in deciding this series. Yesterday in the Texas half of the inning Michael Young comes to the plate and works the count to 2-2. Then the next pitch from Chad Qualls went across the plate and Young came around with his bat and tryed to check his swing. The umpire behind the plate deferred to the first base umpire and he said yes he checked his swing! Replay clearly shows that he went far enough to consider it a swing. Ok no big deal right? They missed that call. Well the next pitch goes 431ft. into center field. and just like that it's 5-0. Huge missed call that may of put the dagger into the hearts of the Rays. Now I will say that if you only get 2 hits in a 9 inning game the chances of winning that game are slim to none. And thats exactly all the Rays got. Will Tampa battle back in the series and get it back to Tropicana field? It will be a uphill climb. And a major one at that. But it's certainly not impossible.

The second game yesterday was the Yankees and Twins. Andy Petite pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits, walking 1, struckout 4, while surrendering just 2 runs. He looked very smooth. If Petite is battling any lingering effects from a groin injury suffered earlier in the season he certainly didn't show it. He was very effective. And the other hero of the day for New York would have to be Lance Berkman. He hit a go ahead homerun in the fifth and a tie breaking double in the seventh all off Carl Pavano. Pavano gave up 10 hits which New York converted into 4 runs. Minnesota just doesn't seem to have an answer for New York. It doesn't matter what year it is. Whether they play in Minnesota or the Bronx. The Twins just seem doomed to lose to New York. And if the Twins don't figure out something and fast then New York will go on to the ALCS  for the second straight year. And I think it would be a pretty interesting match-up with Texas.

And then came the final game of the night. And wow what a gem of a ball game it was. Tim Lincecum pitched a complete 2 hit shutout while striking out 14! A standing ovation is what I gave him in my living room after he ended it. What a performance. As if we have wittnessed some great pitching already in these playoffs Lincecum say's look what I can do. On the other side of the ball Lowe didn't have a horrible performance but was lifted in the 5th inning after giving up a double and a walk. With so little offense in the game who could blame Cox. He just didn't want to chance it. And the umpire's played a part in this one too. After Buster Posey's steal attempt in the 4th inning, even in real time I said yeah "out!" "Wait, what?" "Safe?" Blown call their which lead to the only scoring in the game. Hell even Buster knew he was out. And you knew that because of his answer to the question after the game. "I guess it's a good thing their isn't instant replay" he said with a smirk. Well it's only one game. And after Tim's performance you would of had to thought the Giants were going to win that game. Let's see who win's game two before we crown anybody.

Little side thought. Tonight it's game 2 between the Philies and Reds and the Giants and Braves! I can't wait to see both and I really can't wait to see what the other Roy does. Will he dominate or will he struggle? Will Philly unleash their offense on Arroyo or will they just get by with a couple hits and a run or two. Will Cincinnati get their first hit of the series (I can't believe I just typed that) or will Oswalt follow with a no-hitter of his own? LOL. I know, I can dream can't I? Check back for my post game update either tonight or tomorrow!

Wow. What a exciting couple of games last night. First, my Philadelphia Phillies come from behind and beat the Cincinnati Reds in a error riddled game and then the Atlanta Braves come from behind and beat the San Francisco Giants in extra innings. Now for the recap.

Well.....ok......I knew Roy Oswalt wasn't going to come out and throw a no-hitter of his own. But I thought he would of pitched better than he did. He went just 5 innings giving up 4 runs, 2 of which were homeruns, on 5 hits, while walking 1, and striking out 5. That was not the same guy that helped us get to this point. Was it nerves? I wouldn't think so cuz he has been in the playoffs before. He has pitched in the big games. So hopefully it was just a bad game. A bad game in Oswalt's standards anyways. Let's move to the bottom 5th inning. Down 4-0 the Phillies loaded the bases on a couple of costly errors by Cincinnati. Chase Utley came to the plate and hit a 2 run RBI single to start the rally. Then the Phillies loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth and got another run back then when Victorino walked. Then came the bottom of the 7th. A inning the Reds and really Jay Bruce would like to forget. The Reds brought in their hard throwing rookie, Aroldis Chapman, and facing Chase Utley it seemed at first that he hit Utley. On closer review I really don't think that was the case but, Chase was awarded first base. Then 2 batters later Werth hit a sharply hit ball to third, Rolen threw over to second for the force out but, Utley was called safe. I saw that replay and yeah he was safe. Then came the play that changed the game. Jimmy Rollins comes up and hits a fairly low fly ball to right field. Jay Bruce comes over to make the play but, somehow loses the ball in the lights. Goes right by him. Utley scores, Werth is starting to come around third and would of stayed but, the relay throw was dropped by Cincinnati's Phillips and Werth went all the way home without a play at the plate. Wow!! It's almost like there wasn't anything that Philadelphia could do to lose this game. They were desitined to win the game. Then later in the game both Carlos Ruiz (on the kneecap) and Ben Francisco (in the head) were plunked by baseballs. Now I'm sure they were accidents. There would be no reason to hit them. None what so ever. Just a little concerned with Ruiz's knee. And after I think back to that game, Cincinnati had a tight grip on that game. Bronson Arroyo was pitching prett good. His stats don't do him justice. He went 5 and a thrid, gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and struckout 2. He isn't really a strikeout specialist. He gets a lot of flyballs. He was in control of that game and Philadelphia had hard time trying to get anything going while he was in there. But it was becuase the Reds committed 4 errors that Philaedlphia was able to come back. And it also came down to the bullpens. And Philadelphia showed why they are 2 time defending NL champions. And they now have a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Next up for Cincinnati.....Cole Hamels.

Then came the late game. The Giants and the Braves. It took 11 innings to decide this one. And in the top of the 11th Rick Ankiel crushed a ball into McCovey cove to take the lead and eventually win the game to tie up the series at a game a piece. I didn't get to see most of this game so I can't really divulge what happened in each inning. I turned it on late. The Giants Matt Cain seemed to have a pretty good outing. He went 6 and 2 thirds innings, giving up 7 hits, 1 run, and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts. The Giants bullpen just couldn't seal the deal. The Braves bullpen did just enough to get the win. They gave up some hits but the Giants just couldn't turn any of those into runs. And one bad pitch from San Francisco's Ramon Ramirez to former St.Louis Cardinal pitcher Rick Ankiel was the difference. Now the series shifts to Atlanta. It should be a pretty exciting game 3 with Atlanta having the momentum on their side. All the excitment happens on Sunday. Stay tuned at your WGT forums for more coverage.

Well..ok.....who didn't see this one coming. The New York Yankees are the first team to clinch their series and move on. And the Tampa Bay Rays seem to be mounting a comeback. Yeah it's only one game but sometimes thats all it takes.

So the Tampa Bay Rays finally won their first game of the playoffs. They were just 5 outs away from being eliminated yesterday in Texas. Then Jason Jaso lined a RBI single to score Carlos Pena in the eighth inning to put the Rays up 3-2. Then in the ninth Carl Crawford got things started by homering to go up 4-2 and Carlos Pena delivered a 2 run homerun for some insurance. All they would need is what Crawford did their in the ninth as Texas would only score once in the bottom half of the inning to give the Rays a little bit of hope. Well game 4 is being played as I type this and to be honest its not looking to promising for the Rangers. Lets hope if the Rangers can't pull this one off today that Cliff Lee and company can go back to Tampa and win the final and decisive game 5.

New York moves on. How many times have we seen that over the years? Big surprise. I for one picked the Yankees over Minnesota in a 3 game sweep. The Twins seem to be cursed or somethig when they play the Yankees in the playoffs. Phil Hughes and company made sure of that yesterday by beating Minnesota 6-1 behind the very strong pitching of Phil Hughes. He went 7 innings giving up only 4 hits, no runs, ad only 1 walk, and striking out 6. Very nice outing. And then of course comes in Marino Rivera and slams the door on the Twins in the ninth. Now not to make excuses for Minnesota and not to take anything away from the Yankees but Minnesota was missing Justin Morneau. And the Twins heart of their lineup which includes Joe Mauer and Jason Kubel went a stagnant 3 for 20 with NO RBI's. You wont win if your run producing part of the lineup doesn't produce. And I think that speaks to the Yankee pitching. Very nice performances by all 3 starters. And New York outscored Minnesota in the series 17-7. Well congratulations to the Yankees and good luck in the next round. And remember.........PHILLY is coming for YOU!!!!!   :)

Oh I am so liking this development. Oswalt is overrated and Hamels is touchable. Unless Haladay can pitch 4 games the Phillies better hope Texas knocks off Tampa AND the Yankees because it's going to be a repeat of last year.

Game 5 of the ALDS  knocks out both aces for the 1st game of the ALCS and makes them pitch their second game on short rest. Meanwhile, the Yankees are horsing around resting and getting healthy. Girardi's pitching lineup gets CC and Petite for 2 each, Hughes for one and hides Burnett in the middle.

Since Halladay owns the Yankees if the Yankees get there I'm seeing them winning in 6. So much for MY pick. :-(

More dreaming but getting more realistic with every pitch!   :-D

Ok Oswalt had one bad game. NOT overrated. Give him another start or two. And Hamels hasnt even pitched yet. So to consider him "touchable" is a pretty early assesment. What you said about the Yankees yeah I agree. They are better than what they showed in the regular season. But remember this. If Phillys offense wakes up they are going to have a tough time winning a series against them. So good luck! :)

"One bad game" this time of year is nothing to sniff at. This isn't a 162 game schedule.

Hamels vs Yankees-he couldn't get out of the 5th and gave up 5 runs last year.

Big "if" there, this is the year of the pitcher.   :-)

Well, my prdiction is out the window, I really thought Mn would put up a go od fight...oh well, but let's not forget about the Giants just yet.

I know the Phillies picthing is tough, in fact the announcers last night made such a comment about the Phillies starting pitching only giving up somthing like 4 earned runs...

Hmmnn, if my memory is correct, I think the Giants starting staff has only given up 2 earned runs thus far...West Coast teams just don't get the press..lol.

But what was very impressive with Phillies pitching is that Cincy led the NL in batting average, RBI's and homeruns, and couldn't muster a win.

Ok, yeah your probably right. I really don't remember that last year. But I'm sure your right. You have to remember something though. Last years Cole Hamels and this years are like night day. Big difference. Some would even argue that this years version is even better than 2008 version where he was the NLCS and World Series MVP. But I guess we will have to wait and see. First New York has to get by Texas/Tampa and Philly has to get by San Fran/Atlanta. Which may not even happen. But if New York plays the way they did against Minnesota and Philly can have dominate performances from the EVERY member of the BIG 3 then we will have another showdown from the 2 best teams in baseball. The anticipation is almost unbearable.
