first time playing this hole on the (very demanding) Best of Par-4. Hit my approach just short of the green on the left side, then once on the green proceeded to 5 putt, probably first time since my very first round in this game at Oakmont. Probably the nastiest hole location I can remember...anyone else have problems here?

the best option I have found is to keep the approach below the hole for an uphill putt. I would rather be 15ft below than 3ft above the hole but remember to add a bit to the uphill putt because anything too short will simply roll back down to you!

    hope this helps,

    This!

Lately I shoot 5 yds short and to the right of the hole. This way the ball path crosses below the hole and chances are good for a straight(!) 15 ft uphill putt plus a tap-in for Par.

I was told this ages ago and works pretty good but it's a tricky shot to do.

Hit your tee shot into the hard sand (dark coloured) on the right.... then you have a straight shot too the hole. The only thing doing that is if you get into the soft sand,  you're in trouble.

Heard the same thing from a very good source. Never actually tried it tho and few times i have mishit into hard sand I can't say I figured anything out there either.  I know players that do it tho.

A little luck always helps too and you could always do something like this:

    18 Cabo

Granted those are VF greens. On anything faster i believe the outcome would be very different.  Like Dave said, best bet is to stay below the hole. Par tends to be my goal on this hole, depending on the speed. Birdie is a plus and eagle is like Christmas

    Great shot!

Yes I agree too...stay below hole. The only thing with that is your putt has be to hit hard enough. On Champs if you hit putt too soft, then you will see the ball roll back past ya...lol   Then the swearing starts....lol

I like threads like this. People like the OP can ask a question about any hole and always will get some very good replies.

You need to hit the shot into the green below the hole and on the greeen

hole is a fairly easy birdie unless you are playing on champ greens. Even on tournaments, I fire right at the flag, trying to go a bit long with a little spin. If I mess up, the ball will stay with a decent pitch shot.

On champs... I take my 20 footer and run! If I am fortunately enough to have a sand wedge, I may be a bit more aggressive
