It would have been my lowest score ever, at Royal St. George or any other course for that matter. It would have been my first ever sub 60 round. And I didn't know it at the time, but it would have put me in a tie for 1st place atop the leaderboard. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I blew it. Someone just kill me now.

After I entered the week 30 single play at RSG, I decided to dust off the old Taylor Mades and pair them with a Srixon11. Using that same set up I recently earned a 61 at Bethpage, and I was hoping it could get me another under par score.

I got off to a nice start with Birds at 1 and 2. Followed that with 3 straight pars. Then found some luck with 3 straight birds on 6, 7, and 8. Shanked my approach on 9 and missed right, but an up and down flop saved par. -5 under on the front, not too shabby.

The lucky streak continued at the start of the back 9. A par at 11, sandwiched inbetween Birds at 10, 12, and 13. When I drew a nice tailwind on 14 I thought I was sitting pretty in the catbird seat, but I very nearly pissed it all away. Despite hitting full backspin off the tee and hitting less than 100% power, I found myself inches away from disaster.

I missed early on the approach and shanked it left, finding the greenside bunker. Blasted out safely, but hit the slope wrong and ended up below the ridge, all but eliminating any chance at Bird. I two putt for par, and felt like I let one get away.

So now we come to the tough par 4 15th. Toughest hole on the back 9 IMHO, and I'm just hoping for par. Even par on the last 4 holes would give me a 62, good enough for the Crystal St George Smasher. I would have been thrilled to get it, as so far Bethpage is the only course that I've managed to earn Crystal on. As luck would have it, my approach on 15 turned out to be the shot of my short career:

Suddenly I didn't feel so bad about making a mess of the 14th LoL. Not only did I have some breathing room for the St George Smasher, but one more bird gives me my first ever sub 60 round.  I had tough but very makable 12 footers on 16 and 17, but missed on both.

So now its down to the 18th. Hit a perfect drive, stopping just short of the bunkers. The approach was a dandy, as she rolled to a stop just 6 and a half feet short of the pin. Surely that is a makeable putt, right?

I studied it from every possible angle. Guaged with both putting view and chipping view. The break seemed minimal, but I can't even tell you how many times I've missed a seemingly minimal break putt because I didn't play enough break. I may have overcompensated here. And I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn't leave it short, so I may have hit it just a tad firm. I even survived two consecutive meter skips and eventually dinged the try, but a hush falls over the gallery as the putt lips out.  NOONAN!!!! I tap in for par and sulk off with my tail between my legs. If only I had taken aim dead center and hit an even 5 feet of power, it just may have gone in. Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose. A once in a lifetime chance at a 59, and I let it get away. x_x

    TL;DR I hate this game.

A fun round for sure - bird @15 is a burner!

You're gonna hit 59 on another day certainly!

Well done, the cup is 99% full!

Thanks! This is so well chronicled that I enjoyed it almost as much as playing the game.

    Great job anyway.

Now you have something to look forward to next time.

In hindsight, yes, that putt with wind behind you of 14-16mph IMO really affected that line. (and from my trials I've noted that wind can be a factor esp. when it's at the cross points of 90, 180, 270, etc. degrees)

Good luck in the future, great story, awesome videos.

Nice round and a lovely shot on #15, that's a tough hole.

The thing that struck me with your putt on #18 (this really applies to when using the rear view) was that you left the marker over the hole when you were ligning up the putt which means you were looking along one of the grid lines.  Have a go at moving the marker to the side.  This gives 2 benefits.

Firstly you don't have the shot arc partially blocking your view of the putting line.

Secondly, if you have the whole length of the putt between 2 of the grid lines you get a more accurate idea of how the ball is going to react.  The break at each side of a grid line can show up quite differently and often gives a false indication.

Give it a go, you might find yourself holing a few more putts.

Great round.  Let us know when you reach the "magical" score of 59.

Tell your buddies Icon and Admin2 down in the VEM shop to dial it down a bit, and I just may have a shot at it. Otherwise, the only 59 you'll see from me is a really bad day on the Par 3 course.

You think I'm kidding??? I Just played the back nine of St George in a bracket tourney, and on 18 I had nearly the EXACT SAME PUTT that I had when I missed a 6 footer during my last round. So I play this one dead center, and IT STILL #$%^ING MISSED!!!!!!!

I am so sick and tired of all the inconsistencies in this game. Rediculous.

16-18 wind almost crosswise, this time, (last ball held the line and rolled past with the tailwind), like I said in my previous post above. This time with the wind changing direction, the ball went to the right..as if affected by the wind.

It happens to me, too. But I'll consider the change in the wind, its power and angle.

( scroll down to see putter test with the affect of the wind )

    edit

I love the 1st replay because you can see the power meter.

1st putt It looked like a 6.6 ft putt with 7.5 ft power (on the scale of 15) it lipped out and ended up about 1.5 ft away, you had a slight tailwind. . I think it was a very fast green. If I'm correct, I wonder if that's too hard.

but the 2nd putt looked like you hit it harder, or it ended up 2.5 ft away, the meter is not recorded on wgt replays. And you said it was " strait* ", maybe a side wind had some affect.

Was your aim on hole and did you ding? Sometimes a slight pull on a strait putt works best for me, as I have more SLIGHTLY  pulled putts sink than ding ones on close, level putts !! (but there are some dots moving on yours, yes)

(People can also just aim a little left and ding, but I think the keep aim on hole & 'hit a hair early' is more probable. Consider any wind over 10, and note if it's at 90,180,270,360 degrees because these are strong vector points e.g. thrust, right, etc., where the direction is influential to a putt)

*When hitting any general strait putt, on basically a level green, at a close range(under 15 feet approx.) I have found that the putt will more often drop if I pull it a hair (before ding) then if I ding or miss to the right. (slight push) Sounds weird, but if it wasn't working out for me I wouldn't continue to use the technique.
