Can the ball go straight if I hit it straight? Too many straight balls going too far left or right; utterly pointless.

The ball definitely can go straight.  You will always need to factor in the wind and missing the ding.  Either of those can cause the ball to go offline.

The free Starter clubs have the least Precision and Forgiveness of any clubs available for playing WGT:

    FAQ Home

    Pro Shop

Avg. Distance: Displays the average distance the ball will travel when hit at full strength on a flat surface and with no wind

Trajectory: Indicates the general height of the ball flight

Precision: Defines generally how close to the aiming point the ball will land based on where you hit on the swing meter

Forgiveness: Displays how much Distance and Precision the ball will lose if not hit perfectly

Shot Shaping: Displays the level of "workability" of the club to move the ball left or right during flight

Spin: Defines the level of spin the club will transfer to the ball. A ball with more spin will stop faster on the green

Meter Speed: Indicates the speed at which the swing meter moves, the lower the number the faster the meter will move.

    WGTniv:
    The game is pretty simple.

    Precision controls your accuracy.

Imagine it's like a circle that surrounds the flagstick when you aim at it.  The size of that circle is related to the precision rating.  The higher the rating the smaller the circle.

Your ball can land anywhere in the circle on a dinged shot (left or right, long or short).

It will ALWAYS land in the circle on a ding shot, though sometimes it may land in the center of the circle and sometimes it may land on the very outer edge or anywhere in between those two points.  When it lands on the outer edge this is what you guys have come to know as "the beast".

Was the shot pre-programmed? Does it know you're standing on the 17th hole at Kiawah?

    No, it's just unfortunate timing.

The result you see is the logical spread dictated by the precision rating of the club over 100 or 1,000 or 10,000 shots taken on the site.  No matter how big or small the sample it's amazingly consistent because it is after all only a simple mathematical formula.

The shot data is spread out amongst all users, so there will be times when you run into a lot of "edge cases" (aka deviations, aka outside edge of the precision circle) and times where you seemingly can't miss the center (even when you mishit).

This is the ebb and flow of the game and it's always been there.  In the short term you will have "bad" days and "good" days.  In the long term (providing they are using the same clubs) any one player will see the same amount of "edge cases" or "deviations" that the rest of the players do.

Either of those can cause the ball to go offline.
If that happens does it mean I've lost my internet connection.  ; )

really, then if the wind is straight in your face and you hit the ding, then how come it ends up 10yds of to the side more often than not?

Except for the EZ-Swing clubs which are even worse.

Because wind direction is not constant and can it's direction often fluctuates somewhat while the ball is in the air

Plus at even just a slight angle to the line of a shot, if a shot is long enough and the wind speed high enough the wind can easily blow the wind 10 yards to either side of the aim point.

It looks like the wind blew the words in your sentences around.

    Proofread much?

LOL. He's just missing a comma in a compound sentence. Albeit a bit loosely structured, insert a comma after "can."

I woulda just said the wind can fluctuate, and does, while the ball is in the air. Little easier to understand.  ;-)
