Any suggestions on how to play out of the so-called light brush at Merion - for example, on Hole 18 - with a 40-50% lie?  I just landed there and it took me four shots to get onto the green.  Neither a pitch nor a punch worked, and I assume that a flop would be even worse.

just aim to the closest part of the fairway and punch out to there even if u only go 20 yrds lol or sideways

I was referring to the light brush between the bunker and the green on that hole.  You can't go sideways to the fairway.  I need a way to get onto the green!

Yea....don't try to swing for the green....sometimes just punching the shot out could save you a shot..because most of the time when you "go for it"  you end up with another shot in the rough and most likely a worst angle to the green...  I've learned that from watching a lot better legends than myself...sometimes taking the easy shot to the fairway is better than going for it.

    Generally -

yeah, I'm not the expert but I've had most success with the shortest wedge, and I usually punch out, full top spin to the closest FW and the ding is a big plus.

    Results may vary.

Here's a twitch TV replay of my ball in the light brush, cleve. wedge, starter ball = the full shot didn't work this time but the punch did on this occasion. Note the ball and where it moves in the brush, the spin dot and power. (which is visible on twitch)

    edit:

again,  shortest wedge, punch out, full top spin, ding (generally aim away from said brush for best results)

Light brush or brush will never give you more then 5 -10 yards no matter what you do.

Best thing is to find nearest fairway, sand or rough within those 5-10 yards with a wedge, PUNCH & FULL TOP SPIN.

I have seen 70-80% brush at Pines...that is nasty and you only get 3-5 yards with the above shot.

My suggestion is not to land there in the first place.  Just miss way left if you have to.

Reading does not appear to be a skill shared by many WGT users.  If my ball is just on the edge of the trap, between it and the green, on #18 at Merion it is obvious that a rescue shot to the fairway is not an option.

I appreciate the comments of those who have genuinely tried to assist.  As for those whose "advice" is to avoid landing there, such comments are not helpful at all.

The consensus, so far at least, however seems to be that the position in which I found myself is hopeless.
