    Strongleftside:

Reading does not appear to be a skill shared by many WGT users.  If my ball is just on the edge of the trap, between it and the green, on #18 at Merion it is obvious that a rescue shot to the fairway is not an option.

I appreciate the comments of those who have genuinely tried to assist.  As for those whose "advice" is to avoid landing there, such comments are not helpful at all.

The consensus, so far at least, however seems to be that the position in which I found myself is hopeless.

Well apperantly we can cause because that's not what you said in the first post let me refresh your memory

    Strongleftside:
Any suggestions on how to play out of the so-called light brush at Merion - for example, on Hole 18 - with a 40-50% lie?  I just landed there and it took me four shots to get onto the green.  Neither a pitch nor a punch worked, and I assume that a flop would be even worse.

see a difference ? maybe you need to be more specific and proof read yourself

Best thing is to find nearest fairway, sand or rough within those 5-10 yards with a wedge, PUNCH & FULL TOP SPIN

    ^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^

And try and hit the ding. I have been in this position twice and the green was agonisingly close. I assume it is the pin on the right.

First time I tried to go for it................FAIL

Second time - I punched with full top spin sideways. Found the rough and got up and down for bogey.

Basically I make sure I have enough club to clear that area, long is ok - an easy par, or I play to the centre of the green - if it comes up short it is on the fw.

To OP.  this may take some time but works for me around greens in light brush.( on Merion )

    8yards to pin ( flat) 30/ 40 light brush....

    I take a yard off, so 7 x 3 = 2 ( ish )  = 9 yrds

    x that by 2 = 18yrds   double that when  using a 50 wedge = 36  then add 18

    S0 54 % with 50 wedge..full shot

^ re read that and 54/55 % prob equates to 25 yrds...so just treble the distance ??

A convoluted method I seem to use but hard to change the habit of a WGT lifetime :)))

Hopeless? mmm, we are trying to help mate.

It is your decision where to aim when we told you that no more than 10 yards will be gained with such lie. whether you are close to the green or in the middle of a brush area located 30 yards from the nearest rough, sand, fairway or green!!!

The few times faced with it, I've had luck with this: 50yd lob wedge - on full shot - with a scale of 50 % power = 15 yards using full back-spin----+ or - , L or R for any wind...give it a go...best luck

I have never had a problem getting safely out of Merion light brush using a 64W or 60W punch. If you're close to the green like your example you can get to the green with it. It also gets you out of the same light brush on #2 when you miss going for the green on the 2nd shot.

I'm not sure why your punch didn't work unless you were trying to be too fine with it. Be happy to get on the green, don't be trying to nail a 3 foot circle around the pin. FWIW, 40-50 light brush plays like a 50-60 lie-you gotta smack it.   :-)

You use full backspin out of brush?

    Yep.

This thread  brings back painful memories. I was in a team CC extended tournament. Withdraw once, and I'm out for the duration.

Anyway, I ended up there in UNEVEN LIES. At one point I turned around and tried to get into the bunker. Took my Bo Derek, 'cuz nothing was working.

LOL I think I get that reference.

re: 'You use full backspin out of brush?'

    Speaking for myself, if it's a full shot, lots or FBS;

    If it's a punch, FTS.

edit: My bro had the Farrah Fawcett poster. When I directed live TV at HSN, Farrah was a guest a few times. It was fun.

LMAO. Another one dating himself. Hair braids before they were fashionable and a poster to rival Farah.  :-)
