stencil, you are more likely to encounter problems putting on tournament green speed than lesser speeds, it was virtually a non-issue prior to this summer.  For example, last night I was playing an important match on Bethpage.   My approach to the back left pin on #10 trickled into the fringe, something like 24 ft, 9" down.   On 'very fast' greens you can just let it rip with about 15' of power and never have an issue.  On 'tournament' greens you have to decide if you are willing to risk the ball not moving at all using 10' or less of power.  Instead I had to use 11' of power and blast it 7' past the hole.

I can count on one hand how many times I have putted from the fringe. Bad results early on. Chipping and flop works for me. The only success I have had with putting from the fringe is when it's downhill and very close to the green surface. The experience of putting and watching the ball not move off the fringe is too frustrating for me. I also think you have to "ding it" when putting from the fringe. I'm not a frequent "dinger".
