    Hi all

could anyone help please, just wandering if anyone can shed any light on when to use the caddie selected club.

I am having difficulty when to use and when not to use the selected club, At time when I use the caddie selected club I have massively over hit  my shot but If I change the club to my own selection I come up a lot short of the pin.

I work out my shot taking into account elevation, wind, backspin and 99% of the time I have to take a lower iron it is when I do this I come up well short but this does not happen on all courses or holes or all holes so I am getting confused which club to select.

I would appreciate any help thanks in advance

In the spirit of your question, I will try to help you. Please understand that I am not "talking down to you", I suspect that the following will help.

Have you "mapped" your clubs yet? WGT gave each club a 'rating' distance - do you know how accurate it is?  I'm not saying that WGT is lying - please the conspiracy thread is elsewhere! For example, your CG 16 - 64 deg wedge is rated at 60 yards. Here are the types of shots that you can take with a wedge: Full, Punch, Pitch, Chip, and Flop. In addition you can apply spin to your ball.  So which type of shot and with which spin do you get 60 yards of travel?
(I play the same wedge and here are the numbers that I mapped a couple of years ago:
Full BS 55 yds(do not use), Full No spin 62, Full Top spin 63
Punch FBS 47, Punch No spin 50, Punch FTS 52
Pitch FBS 15, Pitch FTS 17
Chip FBS 5, Chip FTS 9
Flop FBS 18, Flop FTS 22)

For your woods and irons, you need figures on FULL and PUNCH shots with 3 types of spin.

When you have "mapped" your clubs, you will know (pretty accurately) which club to choose and what type of spin to apply.

To map the clubs go to 1 course (BPB Back 9), practice game, low wind (still hoping WGT will give us a 'no wind' option), with your ball of choice. VERY IMPORTANT - do this with the ball that you intend to use for your tournaments because you will get different results with different balls - choose 1 and stick with it!  Get on the fairway, choose the club, choose the spin, DING it toward the pin. Now record how far it traveled when it hit the ground and how far it rolled to the stop. When the screen moves for the next shot: pull the aiming triangle back toward to Tee box (i.e. direction opposite to your first shot). Choose the same club & spin - DING it back up the course & record "air travel" and  and ground roll.  Average the numbers to cancel the effect of wind and record them on your 'Club Map".

Again, I'm sorry if you feel that this is too basic for a player at your level - but this will help answer your question about which club to use.

P.S. Numbers are for Callaway L 33 ball.

my view is simple: never rely on caddie selected shot. evaluate each shot as if you did not have a club in hand.

Just play and find out what works best for you as you go. Life's too short to map clubs and use calculators and spreadsheets.

What i have found is that it doesn't matter what you hit.  Unless you spend money to buy different clubs, the game hits the ball where ever it wants to.  Unless you want to spend a lot of money on a so called "free game" just accept what happens, and try to enjoy the small free part of the game.

    1. You do not have to spend cash to upgrade equipment if you are willing to invest time watching videos and taking surveys.

    2. How, in the world, can someone who has been at WGT since 2013 say that "the game hits the ball where ever(sic) it wants"?  If you really believe that, why waste you time signing-on here?

    3. I congratulate you for recognizing that you must have better equipment, if you are to improve (see #1 above).  I find it remarkable that you can play as well as you do at Bandon with the gear that your profile shows.

There are 2 scenarios for me as to when to pay attention to the caddie. If I'm in 30/40 rough I add 1 club. If in 40/50 I add 2. This is just a way to get the right club in my hands, the wind and landing factor in. This was also before the recent changes in rough shots so that may be subject to change, I haven't seen it yet.

The other scenario is fairway traps. If you take anything bigger then what the caddie suggests you get in trouble. This started when Oakmont came out and is pretty consistent. It's almost like the caddie is giving you the maximum club you can get out with.

Any other time the caddie gets to hold the towel.  :-)
