  Or how about special "mulligan" practice rounds where you can reset the ball to the same spot it was in previously and retake the shot. The latter would do wonders to help you hone your skills.

  This exists........in practice mode. However you cannot change equipment but hit as many times as you like. But note each "hit" counts as 2 on the ball life I believe.

  Correct, every time you click the mulligan button 2 hits are taken from the life of your ball.  Come to think of it, this means hitting the ball again has removed 3 hits from it's life.
