One question, ASCII, a word? Is it pronounced askye or askee?  Wii want to know.

and  NSB   (Nerdy Soap Box)   is not an acronym either.

Often included in acronym lists as a Nerdy gag,  the fun acronym   TLA   (3 Letter Acronym) is ironically also not an acronym.

I've only recently started to play alternate shot, but I'm not sure what all the acronyms mean.

Also, what's the etiquette when someone hits a good shot? I see ns, np, nr (nice shot, putt, roll), but usually, I just don't write anything down. Also, people frequently put a p after the acronym.

Would it be poor etiquette to point out that none of these are actually 'acronyms'. I have this problem at work when people talk about acronyms -- say FBI, CIA, CPU & DVD     and I tell them these are not acronyms. They usually start arguing that they ARE!!!  Like I'm stupid if I've never heard of them.   They get so heated that they simply don't listen to the point.

Just because they are made up of the initials of all the words in order - does not make it an acronym. It is only an acronym - if the initials make up a word that is then used in normal conversation.

So LASER, SCUBA, ASCII, & BASIC are all examples of acronyms. You say them as a word.

You don't try to say FBI as a word --- you say the 3 letters. So it is an initialism, not an acronym.

I see so many texts with an  "Acronyms" list, and 90% of them are simply not acronyms.

I'll get down off my Nerdy Soap Box now.

I knew what the difference was.  I didn't think it was worth the argument to try and explain the difference, I thank you for that.  My Nickle.

It was hardly an argument - just a point of interest (well I find it interesting anyway) - and you would be surprised how many people do not know. If nothing else - a few people found it interesting and maybe some who have not posted learned something for free.

I raised it without saying anything negative, unlike a lot of posters.

I use also  some of thoses acronyms and etiquettes

I  also add  a wonderfull  10Q (thank you ) lol

By the way, lately i play little bit  more alternate games, 2 or 3 per day, if you like to play alternate with average player like me, invite me.

You don't have to be great player to be my partner. The only things i don't like is  if you have to  hit a  60 yards shots and finish 20 yards short of the green or  for a 20 feets putt you pass the hole by another 20 feets putts, umplayble like this  and no fun lol

I'm not going to say thank you to you when I think it was a bad shot. To me, even 6 feet isn't a good shot if I stuck it on a sidehill.

Oh lord...how right you are, EaglesFan. I had an opponent tell me, "VNS" the other day...I was 19 feet away and it was yellow grids all the way past the hole. My response was, "You can putt it then."

Yes, it was on Whistler...you all know the hole. The one when you miss it...it rolls 20 miles away.

Still trying to figure out how it did not roll back down that slope..just stuck there like it was glued.

    That was just plain...FUBAR.
