I've only recently started to play alternate shot, but I'm not sure what all the acronyms mean.

Also, what's the etiquette when someone hits a good shot? I see ns, np, nr (nice shot, putt, roll), but usually, I just don't write anything down. Also, people frequently put a p after the acronym.

    Any other etiquette or acronyms?

I don't use them myself. There's plenty of time to say things properly.

p or P usually means Partner. My opponent may hit a "gs", but my partner gets a "v v ns, P"

The only thing I like to see from my opponents is conceded putts within 20+ feet...of course, I certainly don't reciprocate....:)

Other than that, simply understand that Alternate shot is often about the social aspect first and the golf second....be friendly, chat a bit...as Courteney said, you generally have time to say "nice shot" , "very nice shot", or "you really suck, have you ever thought about switching hobbies?" or whatever.  Most players use the acronyms though.

The one thing that bothers me a bit is when the teams are stacked...when I set an Alt game (and I often do), I try to balance the teams, so it generally becomes a close match...ergo, more fun for both teams, rather than one getting blown out

It took me ages to realise someone writing FFS when they missed a makeable putt didn't mean they were shouting F**k!   F**k!   Sh*t!

My only rule when playing alt games is the word sorry is forbidden.  It's all about having a good time, winning or losing doesn't matter at all.

I missed a 3.5ft putt the other day. I think that qualifies for a sorry. ;)

I play a lot of Alt games and really enjoy them. ( Well most of the time )

When I set one up I always pick the lowest tier player to be my partner. (1) It makes for a more even match. (2) I like trying to defeat my opponents as the underdog.

I always give a gimme to any shot 2 feet & under & I don't really care if my opponents don't do the same for me as I always try & putt my ball before my opponent cc's.

Sometime my partner will have a bad shot & land in a bunker & say sorry. I say oh crap now I am going to get sand in my brand new shoes :) . Its ok p only here for the fun m8.

Sometimes we are getting our arses kicked in a match and I will say, hey p you distract green team while I bend their putters :)

I sometime start off the conversion with something like this. Hi all, gl, relax & hf. From NZ.

Other than insulting other players, the only thing I consider improper etiquette is purposefully dropping out of a game.

First, alternate play doesn't matter - it's just for fun.

Second, you ruin the experience for everyone else.

Third, you affect the record of your teammate. Really doesn't matter to me, but might matter to some.

Just because you don't want to finish a 9-hole game.
