When I play the Nike balls, I have to remind myself that the extra distance of the ball itself will over ride more head wind than the Callaway ball.   So for me, an 8 mph wind in my face,  I'd almost disregard the wind.  Of course, that is if I am using the club's rated distance instead of including the extra distance of say,  the L90 Nike ball.

Example,   180 club may be the 180 club with a starter ball, but what's the rated distance with the Nike black ball?

    jayheels:

    165 no BS.

Assuming Gerry meant 12 ft down...

Depending on the lay of the green, I'm with jayheels.  Using the L71 Nike ball and L100 Vapors, I like shots where I can hit the full value of the club with little or no spin.  If the green slopes downhill toward the pin I might use a bit of backspin, if it slopes uphill to the pin then neutral or a touch of topspin.

So for me, full 7-iron, maybe a bit of spin depending on the above variables.

If Gerry really meant 12 yds down, I'd drop down to 8-iron.

If he meant 12 feet down hill then it's 170 so depending of the green I am hitting to either 165 a touch of  top spin which is full 7iron or

170 which would be a 6 iron hit at 95% power with 1/2 bs or in the middle of the Callaway chevron.

e But if he meant 12 yards down then it would be 162 which would be the 7 iron hit at  98% power with 1/2 bs.

Am I expecting to land on an uphill slope, flat surface or a downhill slope?

Also, what hole am I on?

Assuming your description is correct and using the level 90 Nike Ball, that you use...160 no back spin.

We would also need to know the hole you are playing.

Which hole and what course are we talking about?  Every course/hole play much differently.

Without knowing the above I'd automatically play it for 166 (-3Y) and adjust it for 9ft or 3y dh (DH is 4:1 not 3:1) and with the headwind I come up with a final adjusted shot of:

    169.9y, which for me would be a 97% 6i with 98% b/s.

    Cheers.  Sean.

    gerryniswonger:

It went 181.  Not good at all.

181 yds is spot on where it would have landed if the wind was 8 mph tailwind instead of headwind.  (assuming -12 ft elevation again)

    You hit 171    + 4% for 8mph tailwind = 178.1     +2.9 for elevation    =  181 yds

Hpurey says  "So for me, an 8 mph wind in my face,  I'd almost disregard the wind"

So are you saying to disregard a headwind of less than 10 mph?  In this case your calculation was almost perfect..

KILLER52, Your calculations would have been withing 5 feet. You are the 3rd person to disregard the wind and this appears to be the deciding factor.  At what mph's do you start counting the wind in your figuring?

There are some variables in play...the 12 ft drop in elevation means the ball is in the air longer and subject to the effect of the wind longer, and as the loft of the club increases from long iron to short iron, so does the height of the ball's arc of trajectory.  Throw in variations in green slopes (as others have mentioned) and a given club's circle of precision, and there may be more than one correct answer.
