I think st a is best suited for people with starter clubs as pitch and run shots just keep on rolling while on the other courses you are playing target golf and must use backspin to stop close to hole .Feel free to disagree .

I think so, too, that the fairways are very bouncy so the ball could roll very fa, so St. Andrews is a course that's least dependent on the player's distance off the tee compared to the other 3 courses. In my opinion, St. Andrews is well suited for players who can putt well. The greens have lots of undulations, and there was I've used starter clubs and played with a player who can drive it 50 yards farther than me, and I still shot better than that person because of my putting.

St Andrews is pretty realistic and typical of links golf.  Links golf in NOT target golf; you have to use imagination, you have to invent shots, you have to play running shots sometimes, you have to hit them high into the sky other times, etc, etc.  Next time you see them you ask the likes of Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Price or Nick Faldo how links golf compares to US 'target golf' courses.

    jack nicklaus .

True story - At his last appearance at the open at st andrews the royal bank of scotland issues £5 notes with his picture on the back . He signed 100 of these notes .

People started selling them for £20 each and within months there were thousands of these forgeries going around .Wan,t to buy one .

You try playing it from the back tees with 30mph winds... enough said

Here we go again.  Can the legends have their own forum where they can complain about how far back their tees are and how their legend ball are now useless and how they haven't got a driver to be able to reach a 600yd par 5 in one and... and... and...

I posted in another thread that I have played the USGA Championship at Oakmont, considered to be probably the hardest course here.  I'm only a Master, but played off the back tees and with tournament speed greens.  I only have a 275yd driver, Rapture irons and GI3-S balls.  But I still scored -2.  I bet that will beat quite a few legends with their superior equipment.  I have also played St Andrews off the back tees with hurricane winds... and still finished under par.

Now stop whinning and get practicing.

I am sad to hear you take it that way but that was most certainly not a whine... all I'm trying to say is that st andy's can be a challenging course sometimes... Btw 2 under par in an unlimited play tournament with only moderate winds is by no means special

Every course is challenging, just depends on what your challenge is.  And -2 in that event is huge when you consider some of the scores that have been posted.  I see you haven't done it yet... or did you simply not make the first 5 pages of the leaderboard?

Sorry, but -2 would have gotten you squat in the USGA Virtual Championship Qualifier

You would have needed -6 just to qualify, -4 would have gotten you into the top 250.  I'm not sure if the green speed is the same in the current USGA Oakmont tourney - I can tell you the green speed in the qualifier was torturous.

Your equipment isn't too bad, at the time of the USGA Open qualifier, most of the good players were using your driver and one of the best ever, Iconian(AKA wgticon), was using the rapture irons and I don't believe he was alone.

Granted, the open qualifier was unlimited, so keep on playing and maybe you will get to the point where you'll be able to best some of the better players. GL...
