Approach shots and the short game = scoring.
I'm usually pretty disappointed with an approach shot that leaves me more than 10 feet from the hole.
As mentioned, it helps a lot to know what part of a green you want to be on to have putts with the least break.
It helps to know what part of a green to land your ball on so the contours of the green feed the ball towards the hole. From the fairway, if you choose Flop, Pitch, or Chip shot mode and click on the aiming marker on the green you can see the green contour grid.
If you can't get a level putt, an uphill put is preferable to a downhill putt.
Note trends. For instance. The St. Andrews hole #2 green I noted I was often leaving putts short when putting uphill. I also noticed most other players also left uphill putts short on #2. So now I make a point of adding a bit of extra stroke to make sure I don't leave a putt short on #2.
