The 17th, which is also 299 yards, is actually a par 4 but I think It's all down to effective playing length. Mind you, I'm no expert.

It may well be because it is set up as a US Open course and therefore a par 70; this hole may be one that is changed from par 4 to par 3 for this tournament only, hence why it is par 3 on WGT.

Yardages for holes and their relative par's are, as Boxall says, down to playing length, and because this hole is so much downhill it is considered to be a par 3.  A bit like the 900yd par 3 at Legends Golf & Safari I posted about somwhere, possibly in the Courses section.

Oakmont #8 is a 299 yrd Par 3 for Legends if memory serves me correcty.  I had a 14 mph headwind, used my driver with full backspin, and my shot went 335 yrds into the bunker behind the green.  That was tee to bunker with no bounces in between.  I tried again with the same conditions going at about 75% on my driver.  End result, ball stopped dead 5 yrds for the hole.

Despite it being 299 yrds, as stated previously in this thread, it's all down hill.  Because of this it plays more like 260-265.

I'm a tour pro not a legend with a driving length of aspprox 250 yds, even downhill no way I can drive the green.
