THIS is why you don't attempt to reach the 9th at OAK in two... this was a 7-iron, by the way....

At the end of the shot I got a message 'immovable obstruction- free drop' (I assume that would be the big building it hit) except that the 'free drop' was back in the fairway where the initial shot was hit, and I'm hitting 3, so it's really a stroke-and-distance penalty.. nothing 'free' about that!  And since it's an RG, it's a W/D for me.  This has also been posted in the 'bug' forum

Oakmont # 9 and BPB #7  for the regulars are both Par 5's.  WGT in association with the USGA has presented us these fine courses in full US Open glory. Including rating them as Par 4's as well as Sunday pin placements. To move the pins or update its Par status would be just plain wrong.

Enjoy the challenge, use your abilities and never give up.

    Happy Golfing

    Joe

PS:  For those out there wishing for a putting green and driving range,  #9 at Oakie doubles as the practice green for the course.  Sounds like there could be a rules infringement there...

Reasonable to treat Oakmont 9 as a par 4 for us because it is reachable. Besides, par is an arbitrary number, so long as everyone is playing under the same conditions.

Unreasonable to expect every hole to be a birdie hole. Oakmont 9, Bethpage 7 and 15: they can be birdied, but they just aren't birdie holes, they are par holes. Helps keep it interesting that way.

This is a brutal pin placement. I just aim for the trap nearest the green and then take my chances on getting it close for a par. I try to stay underneath the hole so that I have a short uphill putt. When I get my par, I run like hell to #10.

blast a drive with the wind from the legend tees, and I'm 149 to the hole...  can you 'lay up' from 149?  Hit a reasonable 8 iron to 18 feet... and proceed to 4 putt on 'fast' greens..  and I consider myself a good putter speed-wise...  all you can do is laugh and remember, under NO circumstances do you try for this green.. any 3rd shot that is a putt will result in an over-par score.
