Obviously the first post is old....but can you say when, where and what circumstances was the free drop given (I assume this was a notification).

The only time I have seen it was a long time ago, St Andrews 18th where the ball came to rest on the path. I got a free drop behind the path and played my second with no penalty.

Saw it on Congo 6th when the ball slowly rolled off the green below the low pin and stopped in the middle of the concrete top of the retainer wall, free dropped to the fairway on the other side of the water, same drop as hitting one into the water.

The interesting thing with a free drop from an immovable hazard, GUR, casual water etc.  the drop should be within 1 club length of the lie  at the nearest point of relief (provided it is not in a water hazard etc) and it cannot be closer to the hole.

Hence some GUR have local rules and offer a designated drop zone.

Either way, a penalty should not be incurred for the drop. At CCC #6....I might have to play this to see lol

This is one of the small number of rulebreaking situations which have been in the game "forever". There are a few similar GURs, as well as impossible water drops. The one that I remember is at the Road Hole, STA #17. If you hit far right of the green, short of the wall and in bounds, it will give you a GUR (why?), place the ball in the FW some 100(?) yds from the hole (wrong), and give you a penalty stroke (wrong).

BTW: Hit left of that green, and it will be called OOB.

In 2010 Jiminez actually played for an in-off the wall after he finished his approach on the fringe of grass between the far side of the path and the wall. He was a matter of inches from the wall.

    Shot!

Here, the play doesn't work. The wall doesn't reflect the ball, it rather ingresses it and disappears OOB.

BTW: Another irregular place is the road crossing STA #18. IRL, it is part of the course - no relief. WGT made it GUR - methinks without penalty(?)
