Oh dear.  Can't different opinions be tolerated without resorting to unpleasantness?  Or suggestions to play golf on the Autobahn?

Using a wedge on the green regularly may not be against any rules but some may consider it an ungentlemanly thing to do.

Shame not every male here qualifies as one apparently.

Damn y'all,  I have to admit I am not a real golfer and to be honest not very good at WGT, but I do enjoy the game and have fun playing.  I can't help but laugh at this craziness though.  This is a computer game and supposed to be fun!  If someone wants to use a wedge, iron, or driver on the green that's their business and not anyone elses!  If you don't like it because it is beneath your sense of standards, feel free to go to the menu button and quit the game.  So instead of spending your time here, how about going out and having fun playing your kind of golf...which ever that happens to be.  That's my opinion.

WGT is not real-life golf. This is a computer game. The goal in both is to get the lowest possible score within the rules that apply to the golf game you're playing.

Does the gamer using a wedge on every green violate the spirit of the game of real golf? Absolutely!

Does the real life golfer trying to force the gamer to adhere to his perception of how this game should be played violate the spirit of the game for that gamer? Absolutely!

The rules allow it. I really don't see this as being any different of an issue than using something less than a driver off of the tee. Whatever club you use is based on your own strategy to achieve the lowest score.

You guys are bonkers. Anyone thinking that chipping on the green is poor conduct hates creativity, pure and simple. Unless you destroy the green (impossible here) I see no reason to restrict how a player utilizes his clubs to product the lowest score. Look at this article from none other than Butch Harmon advocating to chip with fairway woods! However some of you would be calling for heads if you played someone who hit their 3 wood in a match play from the fringe.

Anyone afraid of some creative shotmaking is a boring person.

In answer to your question NO.  Going by the way equipment works on WGT, the putter is a required club, that can only be filled with a putter.

    Thanks!

Then I really don't see any advantage to always using a wedge over a putter.

Please give me a reason instead of a buzzword!

Unless forced to do so because the putter was not available, I have never seen anyone deliberately choose to use a wedge completely in place of a putter (i.e. in real life). I'm not referring to just a shot or two. Therefore, I conclude that it is not in the spirit of the game.

There's just something about it that's not appropriate. It's like going to the beach and wearing a tuxedo. A person can do that but they'll look a bit out of place and are likely to be pointed out. :-)

I'm not saying using a wedge is not allowed. It is. I'm also not saying that there aren't times it makes sense to use the wedge. There are. I've even said I've used a wedge a couple of times. But to always use a wedge and not the putter does not fit with how golf is normally played.

Nevertheless, if people do it, I don't think less of them. I don't care what they do. Even so, to note that I don't care what they do does not mean I don't have an opinion about what they do. I'm sure they really don't care about my opinion. And that's fine.

    But there it is. :-)

This is why I'm not usually against posting on a 'necro thread' as now there are dozens of threads on this topic but all the input and info from the forum is scattered.

But hey what can ya do...

All in favour of using any club anywhere else whether that be a bunker, fringe, fescue. etc etc but a putter is meant to putt! that is why its called a putter, and you are suppose to use it on greens! after all you are not gonna hit a 30 yard shot with it!

It's a stupid rule should be thrown out the window and if the pga had any sense they could and should just to make the game of golf better or even restrict the actual shot to maybe twice in a full round of 18. but on here it stops a select few  people learning the whole aspect of putting especially on here as some people use it often!! its not innovative and it certainly is not clever, after all virtually anyone can putt within 2-3 feet after using a wedge to get there.

Thanks for your mindful answer. A lot more intelligent than the insults above.

And, thanks to MrFunnyWobbl for your support!

Still I don't get that "spirit of the game" thing. There is no rule stating "Thou hath to use putter on the greens!" It's but a proposition passed on from Golf 101, and it's successful if we hone our putting skills.

IRL, it's obvious that we should use the courses' resources with care. That is why
I always use putter in a casual round. Secondly, I've never practiced the shot, which showed in the poor result of my past effort on a 100+ ft "putt".

But, when I think of a tournament or even a round with a beer at stake, I might become competitive enough to try it again.

Others may show anticipatory obedience in fear of marshals and greenkeepers who might punish them for damaging the greens, or fear the "unappropriate!" critique by narrow-minded players - to me, such conclusion is more probable than "the spirit of the game". Mind you, in the Olde Days (1744) they teed off only a clublength away from the former hole - that was the rules! BTW, the putting green definition dates to 1952.

Last but not least, here is a different game with some limitations but also with a few dilations, and "no fear of divots on the green" is one of them. And, if it was "against the spirit" or inappropriate here, they would simply make it impossible or less successful.

Side note concerning "Autobahn golf": Unfortunately, I expected a better knowledge of German from an expat who raises his children in our country. Please accept my excuse.

Why are Brits living abroad called ex-pats?

    They are immigrants.

                                 ------------------------------------------------------

I've played alt a few times with people who use a wedge for every putt.

None of them were any more successful than I was with my putter.

I'm an average putter. I wont be switching to the wedgie.
