Robert1893: Unless forced to do so because the putter was not available, I have never seen anyone deliberately choose to use a wedge completely in place of a putter (i.e. in real life). I'm not referring to just a shot or two. Therefore, I conclude that it is not in the spirit of the game.
Thanks for your mindful answer. A lot more intelligent than the insults above.
And, thanks to MrFunnyWobbl for your support!
Still I don't get that "spirit of the game" thing. There is no rule stating "Thou hath to use putter on the greens!" It's but a proposition passed on from Golf 101, and it's successful if we hone our putting skills.
IRL, it's obvious that we should use the courses' resources with care. That is why
I always use putter in a casual round. Secondly, I've never practiced the shot, which showed in the poor result of my past effort on a 100+ ft "putt".
But, when I think of a tournament or even a round with a beer at stake, I might become competitive enough to try it again.
Others may show anticipatory obedience in fear of marshals and greenkeepers who might punish them for damaging the greens, or fear the "unappropriate!" critique by narrow-minded players - to me, such conclusion is more probable than "the spirit of the game". Mind you, in the Olde Days (1744) they teed off only a clublength away from the former hole - that was the rules! BTW, the putting green definition dates to 1952.
Last but not least, here is a different game with some limitations but also with a few dilations, and "no fear of divots on the green" is one of them. And, if it was "against the spirit" or inappropriate here, they would simply make it impossible or less successful.
Side note concerning "Autobahn golf": Unfortunately, I expected a better knowledge of German from an expat who raises his children in our country. Please accept my excuse.
