As already described, the clubs are not linear yardage....and anyone using this method will soon find this out. If you want to hit 75% of a 150 yard club, would it not be sensible to go down a club....and still take some distance off the meter?
Also remember to use the punch shot....it is like a new whole set of clubs at your disposal and helps lock those yardages down.
SmillerTim3: what I can't predict is when the ball flies off the green for 50 additional yds
Personally, the only time I have seen a ball fly off the green like that is when you hit the pin - then it is daft....but having seen some real shots played in golf.....it happens then too.
Basically you will get more roll out from your shots, particularly your 3W and 3-5 irons, as they are not high trajectory clubs......but as someone who used starter clubs until I hit master....50 yards is exaggerated. 20 yards perhaps.
The other scenario is you hit a downslope on the approach, especially on the fringe - these do tend to bounce on unrealistically, but not 50 yards unrealistically.
From masters tees and a good driver, most holes will be approaches using 6-9 irons, or wedges. These will not run that far.
Do not use an expensive ball - to get the best out of them you also need higher level clubs. You would just be wasting your money.
Just play for fun and set your own goals. You only have 120 odd ranked rounds, so you have a lot of learning to do.
