    pmm711:
    I got chewed our royally by a Champion I was partnered with in an AS game for chipping

    Take no notice of that shti, I got my ear bent by a guy because I dared to use free balls in a AS match, even our opponents, put my partner back in his place as I proceeded to land every approach shot within 5 feet & my p kept missing these short easy putts, t'was so funny.

    As for chipping, I never (very rarely) use chip, only ever use it from the fringe, never in rough or sand, its just too unpredictable.

    Pitch is way more predictable &  over 15 yds (in rough & sand) I'd use a punch. And of course a flop is always great but only from fringe or fairway.

    I think it helps to think of a chip as a putt with loft. I use it where IRL you might putt from the fairway or when you're in rough very close to the green.

    All three shots have their place. It's all situational.

    Yup exactly...

    Problem with chips come when u're really thinking that I'll zip spin it and everything else will be taken care of. Need to read it more like a putt with landing spot being an important consideration.

    Also works well out of rough with good equipment.

    Bet this would have twisted his knickers into a dizzy.

    @PhilEStein and YankeeJim:

    Thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it.

    Next time I'm in that position, I'll try a different approach. And in thinking about it, I guess I've never tried anything but a flop from that position because I simply didn't consider that anything else would work well.

    I think you'll be pleasantly surprised but it's going to require a change in the thought process and a little bit of finesse.

    Don't think about the distance to the pin from there -it's usually around 6-8 yards-think about how it's going to roll because of the downhill and play to a spot 3-4 yards from you and let it roll to the hole like a putt . It's actually a fun shot to execute.  :-)

    Thank you for all the replies and tips. I am thinking I am on the right path. It will just take more practice. I want a mathematical equation that has the perfect answer. lol I think many of the situations I am wondering about just take more of a "been there, done that" approach. Some days it all makes perfect sense, and other days, I have no clue what I am doing. ...a lot like my real life. ha ha That is why I love this game, always something different.
