Maybe I am just a hacker, but does anyone else think Oakmont is a course worth playing? I can't see any reason to have such a pitiful course affording so many tournaments. I play a lot of courses (in reality) and can't imagine paying good money to play this one. Come on, a 299 yard par 3? Greens that only a wizard could figure out? Guess I'm whining, but I have played my last virtual round there.

    Your kidding right?

Most avid golfers would love the chance to attempt an actual round at Oakmont, better yet under a US Open setup.  Sign me up.

    Cheers,

For me Oakmont can be incredibly frustrating, tapping a putt and seeing it roll 30 odd feet past the hole, the par 4's with almost no hope of getting there in 2 but that's part of the beauty of it too. You really have to think your way round the course, get to know the greens so you avoid the downhill putts, lay up on the long par 4's and play a wedge close.

Don't expect to end up with a St. Andrews score, try for par and occasionally you'll be rewarded with a birdie.  Finally being able to get the big R9 driver and G10 irons has helped tame it for me too.

I can understand why you'd want to give up on it but try not to, it can be a really rewarding course when you get it right.

Ok, ok. You guys have made me feel ashamed to call myself a golfer. I humbly apologize and promise to work harder. Keep it in the short grass!

No worries, I can't play it either.

Oakmont is diabolical, unfair, unnerving and frustrating.....and I love the challenge.  You can make a dozen fantastic shots and only end up 2-under.  You can also miss just a handful of fairways and greens and be looking at 80.  Keep at it, you'll figure out the greens, and on that day when it all comes together it will be your best day to date on WGT, guaranteed.

Oakmont was so extremely frustrating when it first opened for play a year ago, with ultra-slick tournament greens. At regular green speeds it became quite manageable, but with a few holes that are just really hard to conquer, especially 2, 15, 9, 18 and, strangely, 13. But sometimes on this game it just sort of opens up and approach after approach come in tight to the pin and there is some awesome scoring. Can't explain it, but when all of that clicks it is awesome.
