    cjfelton:

Oakmont is diabolical, unfair, unnerving and frustrating.....and I love the challenge.  You can make a dozen fantastic shots and only end up 2-under.  You can also miss just a handful of fairways and greens and be looking at 80.  Keep at it, you'll figure out the greens, and on that day when it all comes together it will be your best day to date on WGT, guaranteed.

"If it was easy, anyone could do it."

I had to laugh at your comment cj...

I just finished the USGA version of Oakmont and am stunned. I've only been playing WGT for a few weeks and have put enough in to get a new driver and 3W, as well as a couple of nice wedges and a spyder putter. I've practiced quite a few rounds, including several at Oakmont, but none of that prepared me for today.

    Playing from the tips (green)?:

    13/14 fairways

    1/18 greens

    1 birdie (4)

    2 pars (16 & 17)

    Shot a 97.

The fairway I missed, I didn't even have enough club with my Taylor Made driver to get there. And you can obviously tell by the number of greens I hit - let me rephrase that - the number of greens I stayed on, that I was either completely bereft of clubs/balls with spin or I had nothing in my bag that could reach the long par fours in two. Heck, playing a 600+ yard par 5, I still had about 153 to go for my third after absolutley lacing my first two shots (driver/3W).

I'll be back; but only after months more of practice, convincing myself it's worth the money to shell out enough for a decent set of sticks, and a bucket of Callaway balls.

I've played a TON of virtual golf, Links, Tiger Woods PGA tour, Golden Tee in the arcades...nothing has humbled me like this.

Time to go back to work.

    Dang.

I gratefully posted an 80n at Pro tier today after it frustrated the hell out of me. And I guess it will again and again, if I ever advance any more.

Oakmont is my favorite course at WGT.  it demands you to hit the tight fairways and  fast greens, most generally on approch shots i go a club down, watch the elevations close,

I believe the members at Oakmont IRL pride themselves on having the most difficult course possible.  Our WGT version certainly reflects that.  I don't play it often but I do like to challenge myself from time to time.  Par feels like a huge accomplishment there,  Very different from Kiawah and St. Andrews and that's a good thing right?  My best score on Oakmont?  A 67 and boy was I a happy camper!  'Course I also just shot 77 with tournament greens.  Ouch.

Edward, I like a challenge also, but there is something to be said about horses for courses. I could have given up on OCC yesterday but I thought I'd have another lash at it today in a less demanding setup. I played the 18 hole regular tournament today and instead of a 97 (under USGA conditions) shot a 79. It was my mistakes that killed me, not the course - although I still believe that I don't have the tools in my bag yet to conquer Oakmont.

Today, I hit (and held) 7 greens as opposed to 1 yesterday. I only had 2 3-putts, hit 12 of 14 fairways (and was soundly punished for missing those 2) and only had one triple bogey as opposed to 3 or 4 yesterday (as well as a quad bogey).

I had several birdie looks but missed the putts by a hair each time.

All that said, the course played just the way I expected it would, my shots went where I hit them for the most part and the course gave me what I could take from it.

As I mentioned yesterday, I have played a lot of virtual golf and I firmly believe I can compete on Oakmont or any other track once I have the right tools in my bag. The Pro tier leader on the 18 hole regular tournament is sitting at 61. And I can see where I can definitely be 18 strokes better than I was today - just not with the clubs I'm hitting now.

That's the beauty of Oakmont, you're very unlikely to ever play a round and think That's it, that's the best I could ever do here.

You'll always be back for more.  Idealy with bigger clubs and, excuse me, sticky balls!

Scored a 65 once. But to get a Par is good going. I admire those that post a 60 on a RG. They take ages to fill up, especially the front 9. A Full 18 RG is avoided because it is just torture for most. The 9 is slow to fill up, because people can't face having a good round belittled by the 9th hole.

I can't remember the hole, but what winds me up most is ending up in a green side bunker and playing a great shot out to within 4 ft of the pin, then finding out you are putting for PAR on the side of Everest. For me that is not golf, but crazy golf. Like hole 7being only a PAR at BP I think its unfair.

The kicker of course is it is the same for everyone. But, I am in a particularly foolish mood when I risk my RG credits on Oak. I rarely get anything back, and my fun is killed for the evening.
