    SimonTheBeetle:

I really can't understand why some whine so much about losing Oakmont. And the part I detest the most is that if one says he/she didn't like the course, those whiners jump into the person throwing some disgusting insults like "Oh, you hate it 'cause you suck at the game and don't know how to play on it".

I got this for those trolls!

Where does anyone say that, I don't see it anywhere! The rest of that is true though!

Oakmont was one of the toughest test on WGT as it was when they made it available, and only a handful took the time to learn it and appreciate it, the majority just avoided it like the plaque...

You didn't have to learn how to avoid the bad camera angles, or figure out which hole and greens were mapped wrong, it was just tough like Merion, and unlike some of these other new courses....there were no easy low scores like BPB, STA, Kiwiah.

When I started playing again, everyday I played 18 holes on BPB, CCC, Oakmont, Kiwiah, and alternated STA and RSG,,,I didn't play Oly much because I sucked there, but I liked the course!

Oak was by far the hardest course to play, without even considering it's history....

I would tell you what you can do with those extra middle fingers, however considering that you haven't been around that long and have been nursed on these new courses it is easy to understand why you don't get it!

Aside from missing the point of this thread , I would like to correct the missasumtion that not liking a course has far other misnomers.

Yes , I could rank my choices but I prefer not. They do change.

Yes, I can manage the course like all the others, but I'm still impressed when I see a new outlook by a playing partner on a different approach. So no, I haven't seen it all. Always like trying to work the course to my advantage.

Really want to say thanks to WGT for getting Mobile players more involved in more facits of game play in the Country Club aspects of the game.

Most definitely. This was also where WGT introduced 13 greens. The qualifying for everybody was on those speeds and Oakmont immediately proved to be an extremely hard course. It was all about putting and knowing where to land to give yourself the best chance. Under was always the best.

IIRC, 62 was the cut for the VUSO. I got a 61 on the last day and got in under the wire. The only VUSO I ever qualified for but I have a hat and a bag tag to remember it by.  :-)

Nothing wrong with Kiawah . It too is just like Oakmont you just have to learn how to play it . Good course management and ball placement are the keys to playing Kiawah and posting good rounds .

    Robert1893:
It's the greens not the setup. The breaks on the greens (at least on the mobile) can be, at times, indecipherable. Additionally, there are times that there is no good camera angle for viewing a putt to get a decent read.

    YankeeJim:

Kiawah was WGT's first attempt at a full course with putting on greens. They didn't get the green mapping quite right and there are a number of places where you just can't believe what is in front of you, read-wise. For the longest time the best advice for that course and putting on it was to "memorize" the spots. The 3rd hole is notorious for this with putts under 6 feet.

You can tell by the succeeding courses that WGT's green mapping has improved but it took them a while. BPB and SA suffer from the same "learning" but aren't quite as obnoxious as Kia is.

Small consolation, even the best mess up #3. In the 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah at the end of the 3rd (2nd) round, Tiger Woods was facing one of those 4 foot putts on that very hole. He was hole high right.  Darkness was going to force play into the next day but he opted for putting out instead of taking the option to mark his ball. He missed the putt! Probably figured 4 feet was a no brainer. Heh, it ain't and you see that every time you play #3.  :-)

Ah! Now I see. That #3 hole in particular!! Yes, it has provided some unforgettable memories to me, too.

Thanks for the enlightenment to you all and for the consolation to Jim. So it wasn't just me. Good to know! HA

In that case, you haven't read them all thoroughly. It wasn't the exact wording, but just because he said it in a VERY gentle way with "no offence intended", it doesn't change the inner meaning of it.

Really? That can be very subjective. Personally, I never felt Oakmont the toughest test nor the hardest course to play as my average there is 60.33, 55 being the lowest and 68 the highest, showing that it's about the same as my entire average.

I know what to do with extra middle fingers so thanks but no thanks! And for some people, it doesn't necessarily require a long time to figure out and appreciate things so your statement does not satisfactorily explain the reason why I DON'T GET IT! I always welcome and cherish old boys' tips & advices, though.

Upgrade??? You cannot be serious. We lost oakmont without an apology or warning. People who took the time to learn the game appreciate the challenge and design of course. The red tee legends, tour legends and champs looking to pad average do not. You have your st andrews front 9, so be happy

I'm tired of people trying to paint this as no big deal.

I will miss it too. I learned the game on there with my starter clubs.
