Hey there. Not sure if this is right place or not, couldn't find anywhere else to put it. If moderators want me to move send me a message straight away.

    To the point.

I can decently drive and chip (with occasionally silly mistakes) but when I get to the green I am terrible. I did a round at St. Andrews this morning, +33. On two holes I missed the fairway and killed my chance at par, but the rest of the time I would get to the green and just mess up my putts.

    Any advice?

Just a five-word sentence for you.

You need to play more. ;^)

    Good luck.

I know it not what you want to hear, but go to the putting greens and practice. I just started yesterday -100 putts per day from about the same distance, same speed, (WITH THE ROCK!) Use the putt reader, and after 10 successful putts in  row I'll move to the next position. Look at you stats in your profile. I've started with the easy green, and stick with it.

PS: I haven't made it to the 2nd position yet, but I got the 100 putts in and I used lots of Mulligans.  (WITH THE ROCK!)

Looking at your equipment, firstly, add your 3WD. Secondly, one major advice: Don't chip or pitch with these clubs! Try to throttle a punch or maybe a flop instead. Note: Don't you ever trust the default club offer - this caddy is crap!!

When putting, look at the green speed (top right corner). It changes a lot in the beginning, and it's important to know how strong your putts must be. "Standard" is 100% of the distance indicated, and each designation changes it by 10%. There are tables around for reference, if you need these.

While throttling is non-linear with other clubs, putters work linear. 54 % of a 30 scale will bring the ball to 18 feet, +/- elevation and green speed. Try to bring the ball close to have a tap-in second putt.

Due to the linearity, you can easily use a bigger scale. The meter will run slower on 27 % than on 54 %.

For more detail, come back with a question or look at one of the many putting guides, some with imposant maths!

    Thanks for responding everyone.

So, I added the 3WD. Thanks for the tip on that.

Ok, so no chip or pitch. May I ask why I shouldn't and what benefits I gain from a punch or flop?
If it's to in-depth don't go into it, I don't want to take too much of your time.

For those who told me to practice...

Yeah, I will be doing the putting greens a lot, as well as playing a lot of horrible rounds of golf, (for example +33 over par the other day).

Thanks again everyone for taking time out of your day to give me tips, I am thankful.

    Hi,

Take advantage of the putting green to iron out your putting woes

For what it's worth, if your problem is judging distance to hole on slow greens ( which I'm assuming you're on) add 1.5 feet plus or minus 1 ft. for every inch of elevation . Example, 10 ft to hole 2" down = 8 + 1.5 = 9.5. If your problem is judging breaks on the greens, there is no substitute for practice as others have pointed out.

    Doc :)

The practice green for putting is CRAP !  The distance is not even close to ranked round greens .. When I bought this putter I went to the practice green to map the distance , That was a waste of time !!

Ken , the best thing to do is download a talk program and have someone explain things as you play .. I use zello , Some people use skype ..

There are 2 aspects of putting.  Distance control and break.  I think most will agree the first you want to work on is distance control.  Most will probably aim to stop somewhere around a foot past the hole.  If it is not hit hard enough, it can never go in.

Once you have the distance down, then work on the breaks to the hole.  Use the search to find something that may work for you in regards to reading breaks.  You will even find by using the search ways to judge how hard you are hitting putts.  There are a couple of different methods for doing do.  I use the movement method and have my distances mapped for each movement for the different green speeds.  You can find that distance method by using search.

You have to try different things to find out what works best for you.

Ding method, also off ding method, over time you will work it out.

It will not happen overnight, it takes time and a lot of practice.
