    Hello all,

I'm kinda pulling my hair, what there is of it, out here.   Bridgestone currently has 79 members and we struggle to get 20 people signed up for big tournaments run within the club.  Some of you may know about the tournament Johnny (WigerToods2010) came up involving the English Premier League, a truly brilliant tourney that only just scraped together the required 20 sign ups.

We have quite a lot on offer for people to play in, they just don't seem to want to be part of it.  I don't understand what the point of joining a club is if you aren't going to take part in anything going on there.  Is it the free putter and shot pal?  I sure hope not.

I'd be very interested to hear what advice other club owners and directors have as to how to get folk involved in club tourneys.  Also, whether owners boot members who don't take part in club activities.  I currently have a list with 32 members on it who are inactive within the club for whatever reason.  A few of them are fairly old names who I'd be very reluctant to boot but, if they never play again, why keep them?

We've been lucky enough to get a couple of new members recently who are active in the club but could really do with some more.

Sorry for rambling on, I'm just a bit fed up right now and needed an ear to bend.

Hey MM as the club owner you have to set the club rules and standards . In my club where Im a director there is a weelky tournament that all members are required to play in order to remain in the club . A member can get an exemption by either winning this tournament or through a director for emergency reasons . Miss 3 of these tournaments without an exemption and its good bye .

We all understand that this is a game and that real life comes first just that simple . But at the same time dont join a club if you dont want to play and be involved . You boot inactive players just plain and simple . Contact them as to why they havent been playing I always go through the club roster and contact absent members . Those who respond with a valid reason get to stay and those who dont respond get cut .

We are a small L14 club , right now 40 members with one head on the block . But every week we get over 95% turnout for club play . You have to have club rules and enforce them as well .Its not fair to the active members to let inactive members ride the roster and take up space or benefit from their play . Make the cuts needed and start looking for new members .

Concerning inactive members, methinks they are like all inactive players: Life changes, interests change, WGT time goes up and down. You can't expect that all members stay active forever!

So, whatever you do to keep your members active, you have to accept that they turn away at some time. Some say goodbye, some don't, some come back, some don't.

Your CCs include 40 and 80, respectively, of 250 possible members. Thus, you must not say that they are "take away space" from others - there's plenty left!

OTOH, it's o.k. to discard deadwood, either with correspondence or not. But, it's also o.k. to keep the old buddies a bit longer.

I'm glad this thread was started because it gives me a chance to ask couple of nagging questions about country clubs.  I started playing about 2 months ago and have made what I would call slow progress.  I am now L43 and Pro tier.  I believe I'm about to turn Tour Pro.  I have received several invitations to join country clubs and have rejected all of them so far because I'm not really sure what I'd be getting into.  I do not play every day by any stretch as my longest consecutive day streak is only 10, but I play most days.  However, I do not want to put myself in a position where I am going to be pressured to play more or play at certain times or to purchase better equipment or install a skype chat system on my PC.  I realize I can go ahead and accept an invitation to join a club and then quit later, but I really don't want to join something under circumstances where I don't expect to stick with it.

Up to now, I am enjoying the game just fine by playing the "public" tournaments and purchasing some equipment through tournament winnings and surveys (and a little real money).  I can see where that would get old after a while though and I probably won't be winning much in the near future if I am promoted to Tour Pro.

So I've rambled on long enough and will finally get to my question.  What are the expectations in most country clubs?  I know every club is different but would I become one of those frustrating members in most clubs if I only play a few times a week, or am only available at certain times of day?  Is there generally pressure to purchase equipment to get better or to pay any kind of "dues?"

I like this game but I'm not obsessed by it and I suspect I don't take it seriously enough to become a valuable member in most clubs.  I'm having a difficult time determining if joining a CC will make the game better or worse.  (I couldn't care less about the putter and shot pal, although I probably should!)

All I ask of mine is that they play in club tourneys.  Not all of them by any mean, nobody is ever asked to commit to that.  Ideally members will also post in the club forum and try to get to know other members.  We have many tournaments that require you to sign up and therefore use the forum, anyone who doesn't is really missing out but certainly wouldn't be evicted.

Far from it in Bridgestone, you're more likely to end up with a free bag of clubs.  We've had many tournaments set up for low tier players with a stroll through the pro shop as the prize and I'm always amazed and saddened by how few seem to want free gear.

We never have and never will expect anyone to pay to be a member.  I've heard of it around here but find it deplorable.

I can't guarantee anything but joining a club will almost certainly improve your game.  You'll have a pool of friends you know won't quit on you during a round and every high tier player I know is more than happy to pass on their knowledge to anyone who asks.

If being in a club sounds like the sort of thing you'd like I'd be delighted to see you join Bridgestone.  No commitment, quit any time you want to if you don't like it.

And I'm also not a shot/putter pal person, never got on with them   :  )

    You nailed it!

Some have high expectations (towards daily play and commitment...), some don't. One CC is even advertising, "you can do what you want" ...

In between, there are certainly enough CCs to say, "show up occasionally, that's fine".

Furthermore, some have special features, like Skype or mobile play or profession, region, faith...

You'd have to find that out! But, many features of CCs like tournaments and CC forum, are hidden for externals, and faces may change between outside and inside. Thus, instead of

you better take the "risk" and peek inside after questioning the owner and directors.

I'm certain that you would profit! Obviously, the Pals may be a technical help, but more importantly, your motivation may rise. You'd play with "family" or friends, keeping quitting to a minimum. You'd play CC tourneys with small participation and special conditions, more likely to contend. You'd have those friends available for tutoring and advice on purchases etc. etc.

So, you'd probably play more, and practice is good for your game!

    Hi Mainz

It's virtually impossible to get people active in the club when they don't want to be as a relatively new clubowner I have found it very difficult to get people involved no matter what I do I recently made up a very easy club tournament for hacks and amateurs with the first prize be a premium pack of balls not one person in the club signed up for the tournament

All I ask in the club is to play your passes and sadly over  half do not I recently purged over half my club (30) from Hacks to legends for refusing to play their passes

I think there are too many clubs out there at all levels where the owner has not been active in years and players to sit in those clubs and reap the rewards of the club without having to put anything into it

WGT should purge clubs where the owner has not been active in the last two years

Thank you both for the detailed responses.  I really appreciate it.

AIosso, you are correct that I need to just try one and see how it works out.  Not being able to see "inside" a club before joining is exactly what has caused me to hesitate.  Joining and leaving a club is not the end of the world.  I suspect I finally realized that even before I posted.

I also received a detailed invitation last night on my profile for a club that sounds like it really fits my needs and I have accepted.  MainzMan, if that club doesn't work out, I will definitely keep Bridgestone in mind.

    Thank you both again!

No worries, hope you like the club.  Finding a good one is a real bonus around here.
