mpr2929: I know every club is different
You nailed it!
Some have high expectations (towards daily play and commitment...), some don't. One CC is even advertising, "you can do what you want" ...
In between, there are certainly enough CCs to say, "show up occasionally, that's fine".
Furthermore, some have special features, like Skype or mobile play or profession, region, faith...
You'd have to find that out! But, many features of CCs like tournaments and CC forum, are hidden for externals, and faces may change between outside and inside. Thus, instead of
mpr2929: I really don't want to join something under circumstances where I don't expect to stick with it.
you better take the "risk" and peek inside after questioning the owner and directors.
mpr2929: I'm having a difficult time determining if joining a CC will make the game better or worse.
I'm certain that you would profit! Obviously, the Pals may be a technical help, but more importantly, your motivation may rise. You'd play with "family" or friends, keeping quitting to a minimum. You'd play CC tourneys with small participation and special conditions, more likely to contend. You'd have those friends available for tutoring and advice on purchases etc. etc.
So, you'd probably play more, and practice is good for your game!
